Stimming Redirection Needed!!!! | Autism PDD

My daughter was doing the thing with her lips too, her OT suggested horns, a kazoo, blowing bubbles, chewing gum.  Nothing worked like the chewing gum does!  I thought she was a little young for it but she does not swallow it or spit it out and she's stopped doing the lip thing.  Good luck, I hope you find something that works well for your son.

I'm wondering if he is reluctant to swallow his spit for whatever reason, so now that he's not drooling he needs something else to do with it.

Does the thing he does with his nose result in a nasal voice/sound?  If so, he might be interested in experimenting with other ways of modulating his voice, like a megaphone (rolled up piece of paper), kazoo, microphone, fan, etc.

I would try to replace the spit-rubbing with finger-painting.  I would also try a social story, but I don't think I have any samples on that subject yet.

Good luck with everything.

First....happy first day of school to everyone!

Here's my deal.  Liam has this stim.  I will try to describe it.  He takes both hands to his face puts them over his nose and SQUEEZES!  Along with the stim, generally comes a loud verbalization.  This has never been a problem for me, as it is apparent he needs this.  We do major physical stuff during the day as well as deep pressure rub and he continues this particular stim.  I did, however assume this would decrease as his words and communication increased.  I was very, very wrong.  New words excite him...and this stim has increased in particular.

Here comes the problem.  Add spit into the equation.  He just learned to do the blubbering thing with his lips, which was suggested by the OT to decrease his drooling, which it has.  He rarely drools now, but he is constantly making the new noise and spitting everywhere. He is rubbing his face with saliva, and his squeezing has gotten to a point that he is leaving fingernail marks in a triangular shape around his nose.  The saliva is causing him to get pimples.

I am lost as to redirection.  Anyone have any thoughts? Help!

As always, thank you!
