Old videos | Autism PDD

I was going through old home videos last night with the purpose of looking at my 3 year old to see if I missed some subtle behaviors.  One thing I noticed was that at Christmas he kept putting his new Thomas train to his ear and his eye contact wasn't great.  One good thing was that his speech was still about the one-two word level, but now it is at the sentence level so that was a good improvement to see.

Another thing that stood out was when dd came downstairs this past Christmas.  In the video she is excitedly saying about 12 times in 60 seconds "Santa brought us stockings".  With her I had gone back and forth about whether she would be dx, but seeing the video clip now I see it is so obvious.  She definitely sticks to what she wants to say or talk about.  There was another clip of her opening a present and she kept saying afterwards, "Mom, I got My Little Pony Walking Sweet Steps."  Even when I tried to transition the convo, she kept focusing on talking about that toy.

I found it so fascinating to watch.  This was from Christmas 2006 so it was recent.  My goal is to look back between 1-3.  I have a feeling her signs will appear more obvious to me now.

Has anyone else done this with their old videos and noticed things that you didn't notice while you were in the moment?  I think I just get so used to how the kids are that their behaviors seem normal to me.

Most definitely.

We have combed our old videos etc..., but BB the stuff that we noticed in them we noticed back then.  It was more a matter of "what do we do with this" or "what do we call this?"

I recently did this and saw Mason hand flapping and spinning!!  I never recalled him doing this...it must have been a short period of time because it is happening during the entire Christmas video (x-mas '03) but don't see it in his next birthday ('04) video which is in March.

I also see a lot of his lack of eye contact and not responding to his name.  I guess I just always assumed he was so engaged with his toy or whatever it was that he was doing that I didn't think it was a bad thing.  But most of his bday video (04) is us calling his name, trying to get him to respond or answer questions and he doesn't even look up.

Like you said, that was just how he was so it seemed normal to me.
