Welcome to the board! I'm sorry that you are having a tough time getting services and childcare. It's not easy getting either for our kiddos. Welcome to the board! It's been a great resource for knowlege, support,
and plain old good times for me.

Strangely enough, I have heard that New York is a GREAT state for
services. Tzoya, a member of this board is a special ed. advocate in new
york, and will probably have lots of fantastic advice for you. She knows
the state policies inside and out!

On another note, moving out of NYC (even if it's still within the state)
might help you with your day to day living. There are places that are still
urban, have a lot of resources, and aren't as costly to live in and are less
difiicult to find childcare options. Hopefully someone else here can help
you with that, as I am on the west coast. (services are great where I live,
But, cost of living is high here as well)

I have a good feeling you will find some fantastic help here to help you
put an end to what you are dealing with now. Glad you found us, and
good luck!

Hello everybody,

My name is ify, I live in New York city. Iam single parent of almost eight year old PDD/ NOS boy. I cant even tell how much the special ed system in NY has failed my son. How much more telling you how many times i have lost my job, my income and apartment and have come to the point of homelessness due to difficulty Iam encountering getting a child care provider for my son . nobody want to deal with him no  matter how much you offer to pay. the worst is that the part of New york where i live have no after school care resources for this kids. Iam stock with my son. I thinking of moving out of state where I will get a better resources, services, school system and autistic program to address my son's out of control symptoms. and the BIG QUESTION IS WHERE?does any body has answer I will apperciate your responce. thank you every body. remain blessed. God is our streinght in this race. Any way it's nice meeting you all. Iam happy to be part of this board.

Wanted to say welcome...and bumping this for tzoya.New York City fails sped kids SO much, there are actually separate special education laws that JUST apply to NYC that enable parents to get their kids' private sped school tuition paid for thru the City. However, to implement those laws takes bucks for a lawyer and for paying the tuition up front, first (which amounts to thousands) and THEN getting reimbursed. I think your conclusion tha you will not be able to get services for your child within the confines of NYC is totally correct.   However, leaving NY to live elsewhere is expensive, too.  For example, once you leave the City,  you really need a car. And renting if you are on public assistance can be tricky because no landlord can be forced to rent to people who need assistance.  Areas of NY that are cheaper include upstate and far out on Eastern LI (but the cheap LI towns are more expensive than living Upstate).  The autism laws in NY are good, but some schools ignore those laws thinking that parents will never find out. If a parent discovers that the school district is breaking the law, they can take them to Due Process, but that usually requires a lawyer, too. Sorry, but I have no more advice,
