Hi There! :)
I mix up ABA with RDI! Not ONE is BETTER than the other iffen you ask me. So I always TRY to learn as much as I can, and do trial and error. Once you find out what WORKS for your kiddo, then it becomes a lil easier on HOW to teach.
ABA is more like positive reinforcements *PARTIES* WHEN they comply with what you are demanding of them. Iffen they don't comply, then NOTHING ...Notta...Nil. (that includes no negative attention either
I still have YET to learn about VB...Hell! I don't even KNOW what "VB" is abbreviated for...Yeah, I still have lots o' work ahead of Me!!!
ScReEch This is a great book to get you started: "Behavioral Interventions for children with autism" by Catherine Maurice is a great book to get started..it has all the ABA programs from beginning to intermediate and lots of ideas of how to do them and take data:) The hardest thing is to find reinforcers that your child will work for either edible or natural but they have to be highly motivation for your child. A good digital camera for flashcards or a good printer to print from internet..you will be making tons of cards:) Kinko's has a lamenating machine I learned to know very well!
I found the book "A work in progress" and really like it so far. Is there something else I can do? Should we do ABA ourselves? If so, do any of you have any suggestions on where to start? I feel a little overwhelmed but want to help him so much. Tricia A work in progress is a great book. There are aspects of ABA you can do yourself but there are things that you are going to need a consult on. Is there any way you can contract with an ABA consultant maybe even remotely to help write programs and give you suggestions on problem behaviors? I base everything I do off of the ABLLS. Is there any way you can take him somewhere that can do the ABLLS for you to have the consultant base programs off of? Can the school do the ABLLS as one of their assessments? If you hae a video link to your computer you could take video of sessions and problem behaviors to send to the consultant and go from there. HTH Jen
