I agree with NorwayMom, Spongebob has ALWAYS been Skylar's favorite show, and he does the exact same thing. Even mixes things that he watches from his other shows into his conversations. I am so used to it, that when he does it, I can name what show it came from. Be thankful that he has such a wonderful memory.
Technically it might be scripting/delayed echolalia, but all kids learn language by using what they hear. At its extreme, autistic children sometimes have an exceptionally good memory and will repeat whole scenes from a video, and do it simply for the pleasure it gives them (ie noninteractive, noncommunicative).
Your son is communicating with the Spongebob dialogue, and using only single lines/words, so that is not at all extreme. But you might want to gently model "real kid" ways of saying what he needs to say.
Good luck with everything.
hi hun
echolalia and scripting is a huge way children with ASD learn to talk and learn
when lucas was little he loved toy story and when he had a stone in his shoe he said
theres a snake in my boot(like woody)
i knew something was there for a long time he did things like this he is now 6 and only just managing not to qoute when he speaks
Quoting from books or videos. Sometimes using the words to communicate and sometimes just randomly quoting. For a long time, scripting was Lucas's main form of speech.
My son loves Spongebob and he'll remember lines to use in his vocabulary and in related conversations like the other day I told him to sit down with his drink b/c I did'nt want him to spill it and he replied, " I will not disappoint you!" which he got from Spongebob. He'll also use words he heard on the show and say things like " I feel unconcious" Is this scripting/quoting?
