Has your son gotten a proper hearing test? Does he get speech therapy? You're doing a great job stimulating his language, but you shouldn't have to go it alone.
I hope someone else has some good advice for you.
hah, I did this, my parents thought it was creative, did not think it had anything to do with anything, but not only would i use the wrong words to discirbe an object, but would i guess make words up, but they actually sounded like somethin you could look up in a dictionary, they sounded like plausible words, i did this for a bit, then stopped, everyones different tho i figured it was nothing as did they back then.My ds 28 mths, loves to look at books and is nonverbal. He makes up words (sounds) whenever he looks at something BUT he does not pay attention or copy any words I label.
So if there's a cow on the page he says something such as abitrary as "muhbee" and I say "cow". Then the next a bird and he says something like: "daddoo" and I say "birdie". He's also visually interested in letter and numbers.
So I was thinking of using text association and perhaps he would recognize the printed word since he's not responding to verbal input. I don't know where we go from here. Any ideas if it would be better to use upper or lower case letters? Has anyone had a kid like this?
I'm sorry to hear that you're not getting the services your child needs right now. I hope you get them soon, but in the meantime maybe someone here has some answers and advice for teaching early language.
Good luck with everything.
I think it is great he is saying something...it implies several things..he is labelling and paying attention..and is expressing it:)
I always had written word under pics for Sarah and model it constantly..she decoded reading this way and once we had a visual cue of words we could teach her so many more things like language and social skills..stories..ect..Good luck:)
That's what I was hoping Shelley... but when I was thining about it, it seems rather unconventional. And I was considering whether I might just be looney.
NM: Yes, his hearing has been tested and it's fine. At his age it's not possible to test for APD (Zoe has this and uses an FM system and Suzie is borderline) or if he has verbal dyslexia issues.
He goes to speech 1xwk for 30 min. Honestly the ST's have been little to know help when you actually need manpower hours; it's pretty much consultive. Until he gets skills worked out with ABA they really don't do much of anything because they can't get cooperation. He is waitlisted for ABA.
