I went for soothing. (after all, I have to spend time in there, too )
I painted his walls a very clear and very pale shade of blue. kept all the
furniture white. It's cool, calm, and breezy feeling. His bedding is white
with pale blue/green rockets and planets (w/ a few touches of red)
All his toys and books are so colorful, they really provide all the color
(and somehow look less cluttered aganst such a pale background)
Many people have commented on how peaceful it feels in his room. All
dark blue or red accessories fit right in, which is great since those seem
to be the most available colors for boy-stuff.
The race car bed and the checkered flag curtains would really pop more
against more subtle, light and 'clean' colors. Things like that can kind of
"drown" in a darker or earthy color scheme. (yes, I'm an HGTV addictLOL]) Julie, I haven't posted any pictures here - but honestly, Bug looks so much like Adam, they could be twins!
Seriously - Something in the face shape - or coloring - I'm not even exactly sure - but they look a lot alike to me ;)
(Gorgeous!)
My son's room is in blue and white. I just change the stuff on the wall and shelves as he gets older. He has a normal boys room.
We chose a bed that's waist height on me, with storage under. This is work-height for me, so it's easier to help him get dressed, and I love it.
I just did ds room over in Thomas,The walls are white ,There is a border with his favorite trains ,and the removable stickups ,there beds are Thomas sheets and comforters, the little one is still in his crib,so I went with a pattern that we could find in both toddler and twin size.
Zach will be leaving that room (when he is ready)and going downstairs to a room of his own. When he does he will help decorate.
Linda
Soft pastels and nothing colorful or stimulating only books, lego and model making allowed in there. A very quiet room - they share.
Then there's the playroom which is a loud multi-colored, video games, tv, action figures and toy-fighting free for all. My sons room is calming blue with off white stars. He has pictures of the universe and of the Heavens and moon. The curtains are light blue and he has a star night light. His dressers are blue with white handles. His stuffed animals are on the top bunk and he sleeps on the bottom, there are several small pillows, that were my Grandmothers around the bottom bunk on the wall side. He has a small fan on his end table that sits by the bed. His Buddas and chant necklaces are on his big dresser. We has two awards that are framed and hanging above the end table. Most of the room is scattered with tons of books everywhere. It is a calming room, but he still does not sleep all night (HA HA)
Anthony and Frankie share a room. They have full over full size bunk beds but always sleep together on the bottom bunk
The description sounds wierd. After they wake up, I'll take a picture.
This is just my thought watching my two, but I would do soothing. Every house we have lived in (this is the 3rd one already since they were born), they gravitate to the room with the least sunlight, the one that is mainly decorated in blues or muted pastels. I picked the room for them on the side of the house that gets the most sunlight and never thought it was an issue, it was the biggest room between the 2, but they clearly perfer their sisters. So the next house I will pay careful attention to which room gets the least sunlight and that will be their room. I would stick with cool colors as the majority colors with maybe accents in the warmer colors. cool colors are calming and soothing. We have Adam's twin mattress and box spring directly on the floor. We struggled with several different bedding situations and had such problems with him sleeping. We finally tried this and it worked for him.
Moderngnome... how weird that our boys look so much alike. I would love to see a pic of your Bug. Could you pm me one?
I don't have Jason's room "done" per se. He shares a room with his youngest brother, so we've just left the walls plain white, but they have a really big blue race car bed, and dark blue curtains with yellow stars on them.
I don't know why we even bothered with the one bed...they both end up sleeping on the floor! We got them toddler beds, first, after the cribs, but that just ended up with the mattresses dragged out onto the floor, with them again sleeping on the floor, not on the mattresses. Go figure!
We're hoping to move into a four or five bedroom place soon, and I'm planning on doing Jason's room in blues (seems to be his favorite color, he gravitates towards it), and I'm thinking of getting both him and Gabe sleeping mats (like futons on the floor) instead of regular beds.
Evie, my son slept on the floor for about a year and a half, My Grandfather told me he slept on the front porch for about 2 years even in the winter, because he wanted to, that was back in that was back in 1920's Funny huh. Decorated? How long do you want to keep his room the way you are about to decorate it? I hate doing that kind of stuff, so my goal is to keep Cole's the same for years.
I sponge painted the walls ivory, terra cotta, and peach...they look like adobe. Very warm and cozy, but with some textured look to them.
We have bulls horns above his closet, a cowboy print, a native american chief portrait, and various wrought iron wall hangers (like horseshoes or a cowboy's silouhette). Also have a photo collage with glued on rope on the edges. We have his first pair of Levi's hanging off one of the hooks and his first cowboy boots up on a shelf.
This is definitely a cowboy theme, but it looks like its for maybe a 12 year old. I didn't want it too loud or overstimulating since Cole has sleep issues. Tried to make it "his" with family photos, his old jeans, his baby sized cowboy hat.
To make his bathroom a bit more fun, I just used the plain terra cotta color on the walls. But I got Indian symbols and petroglyphs off the internet. I used a paintbrush from his kindergarten set to paint 10" high Indian symbols across his walls. Again, he is too little to get it, but there is a symbol for a journey (horse), friendship (broken arrow), mothers love (turtle), father's pride, love of brothers, etc. I even found a symbol for communication and gave a copy of it to his speech teacher!
You want him happy to be in there, so go for it! If he has no sleep issues, then you have nothing to hold you back. Have fun!
Adam's room is painted Shaker Beige from Benjamin Moore with the trim Crisp Linen from Sherwin Williams. It is a very neutral, very go with anything color scheme. His room is decorated in a sports theme. I picked it out deliberately because the majority of the colors were darker blue's or cornflower and sky blue's which tend to be more soothing...there are splashes of primary colors though which makes it fun. His drapes are navy blue and the valance is sports themed to match the toddler bedding set he started out with (but we're no longer using as he's in a twin bed now but it still looks great). His bedding is mismatched blue sheets and blankets he won't give up that his grandma made him when he was born (all blue....which happens to be his favorite color....or obsession?). He has sports ball wallies on the walls, and an NFL wall hanging, canvas sports pictures and soccer ball clothes hooks, and some dry erase memo boards I got from Target that are shaped like a basketball, soccer ball and baseball. I actually outdid myself on his room and I'm quite proud of it....although my mom says it's way overdone
