I'd be pissed.
Like anywhere else, there is one set of people, typically adminstrators/case supervisors, that handle the placement and drive the creation of IEP's (with participation from all of course) etc., and another set of people, the teachers and therapists who are responsible for implementing the IEP and actually working with your child.
When you go in with guns blazing, make sure the guns are aimed at the adimistrator/case worker types only, and that you go out of your way to be super nice to the teacher and therapists because at the end of the day, they are the ones that will really influence how it goes for your child on a day-to-day basis.
Good luck!
Wait and see. It might not get as bad as you are worried about. Although If you see they really aren't prepared after the first 2 weeks, nip it in the bud. Good Luck, hopefully now that they are aware of the situation they will get things done. You will probably have to check up on things to make sure. Try to form a good relationship with the sp ed teacher, that is the person whom I go to with problems. Good Luck.We just moved into a new school district.
I've never done the move/transfer thing with ds. Same school since K, services started in K. Everyone knew him, etc.... (He's now in 5th)
So, right off the bat - he fell through the cracks. It took a month and a half to find who I needed to talk to. He was to get ESY over the summer. He ended up with 9 days by the time we were done. Better than nothing, but still.... I've also been working on getting his in-home trainer back. No one from the district has handled this.
School starts Monday. I've been in contact with the diagnostician at the school for the past couple of weeks. Made sure she had everything she needed, etc.... We went to meet the teacher this morning. The teacher did not know the first thing about DS, no IEP, etc... He is to be in a co-teach class. I asked the teacher if this was the case --- she had NO IDEA! So, I tracked down the diagnositician and asked her. Found out that yes - he is in fact in a co-teach class. The teacher just hasn't been told yet that she's going to have special needs students and assigned a sp.ed. teacher!
I am having such a bad feeling about this. I've tried to keep an open mind - but... I'm just not up for the fight. I was so hoping everything would go smoothly and I could just relax. Not the case. Looks like I'm going to have to start at this school as one of "THOSE" parents with guns blazing....
Please just wish us luck that things do a 180 by Monday. Sigh...
When I was unhappy at school I went to SE and told them the things I was unhappy with. Being nice doesn't always work. We had to be nasty/firm to get what Daniel needed in school. Not all princiapls/staff follow the law.Beware also some staff in mainstream are unaware on how to help Se kids as well and feel Se teacher's jobs are to help your Se more than them. I had this happen with Daniel in his past school he should be at this year. For this reason we chose to Hs this year! They did nothing with boys who bullied Daniel also. Wish I say SE was good at this school. NOT!
Rach
daniel's mom, Keep on them, sometimes it is the only way, as you already know. We have had to deal with some at my sons school too. I found the more meetings I requested the more things started to get done. And taking my DH along made it better for me, It was just not one against 7, but two. I hate to say it cause it should not have mattered, but it did help. Good Luck Get in touch with the special ed dept. and ask for an IEP meeting. They should review the IEP that he brings with him from the other school an adjust it (with your consent, of course) if it seems to need adjustment at this point. They MUST address the fact that he has an IEP that needs to be IMMEDIATELY implemented. In fact, you already should have been able to meet with them. Put your request IN WRITING. There are legal procedures that must be followed when a sped kid transfers schools and each state has those laws.Well, I went in with an open mind and so hopeful that eveything would be as it should. :(
As of today, his teacher is still not aware of his needs, iep, etc... No special ed teacher assigned or anything.
I tracked down the diagnositician. When I said that his teacher still was not aware of the co-teach class, all she would say is, "I know." She went ahead and set up the ARD meeting for tomorrow afternoon.
I AM NOT prepared!!! I'm not sure if they're going to try to pull something on us - but they can't. I am fully aware of our rights and what they are supposed to have ready for him today. I just don't know what games they are playing.
I have been in contact with this woman since last March --- even before we put an offer on this house.
I am just so, so, so disappointed right now.
