WHAT!? I cant beleive it! You can teach someone social skills??!!!

I had to copy kids growing up to learn how to do only MOST things right, i still screw up (heh, in fact tonight at work my buddy came over dropping off my forklift he borrowed and wanted to talk about some new show with David Diconvney in it, as I loved the X files, watched it since the first episode). Well... I told him, and i was honest, that I was tired (not sleeping latly, go figure, and did not want to really talk, just be left alone to work alone. He took considerable offence, said "alright, must be in a bad mood." The price one pays for honesty, hate when they take that as a shot against them.

Im usually curtious, polite, and mostly awair of others feelings, so im often a little more nicer then most ppl I encounter. But to actually be able to teach these skills (which i assumed the only way to learn was through mimicking, as I did, is awsome and I bet helps kids a TON.

I wish this was avalible for me growing up, their is soo much out their for these kids now days, and im only probably on average about 15 or so years older, much has changed.

Kelly3b - If you want sample social stories, you'll find hundreds of them through this topic on our forum.  You might want to search for a key word using your web browser, since they're not in any order yet.

Hey, is there anything similar for the elementary set? I mostly write my own social stories but a "pre-fab" one now and then sure could save me some time and effort

Another bookmark. Thank you so much.
Norway mom - I really should think you should think of making a booklet
or starting your own resource website .AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THANK YOU!!!  As part of my new position and the creation of our autism program at my school I am responsible for the middle school kiddos too.  This is awesome!!!!  This will help tremendously!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about your kids' teachers, but my son's teachers are at a loss about how to teach social skills.  I happened upon this website called "Teaching Social Skills in the Language Arts Curriculum:  An Internet Guide for Middle School Educators."  It has free lesson plans, covering a HUGE list of social skills.  Most of the lessons involve role playing and include forms for assessing the role play.  For example, "Passing in the hallways:"

NorwayMom40019.1818287037Thank you so much for all the help you give us. I don't reply to to many posts but I always read yours. The principal of our school asked me for any information I had on teaching social skills, primarily for older students.  I will give her this link.  Thanks! Here's a handbook, including worksheets to use.

Look at Michelle Garcia Winner's web site Teach Social Silicon Valley - that is about all they do.  It has been in existence for about 10 years.  I wish I had things like this growing up also.  I had to take what I learned in science about scientific method and carry it over to social situations to teach myself.  It is a form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

How did you find the link?  I went to the Contra Costa County Office of Education's web site and spend about a half hour looking for a link to it.  As far as I can tell this link is released on a need to know basis.
How did I find it?  I don't recall, but I'm pretty sure I got it by googling.  There are a lot of things that probably aren't supposed to be public, but can be accessed via google (check on "cached" before you give up).

If you know something is on a website, you can use google to find it.  For example, typing in the following will limit the search to our forum and find hits with the term "social skills:
