I feel our kids do this because they lack imaginative play skills... so unless they are re enacting a favorite cartoon or video they do not know how to play and have to be directed to it and taught.
Julian just started some great imaginative play recently. He got his teddy bears together and was talking TO them as if he were a waiter and brought them pretend food on plates and cups and fed them. It was very cute! His obsessions were and still are at times, hot wheels. In fact, all modes of transportation fascinate him. Especially busses. I was told this was normal for ASD kids. To focus on something specific and obsess at times. We will redirect him if it gets to involved, but it is a kind of stimming, so if he is stressed, we just let it go. It is his way of relaxing after a hard day. Thanks Jen143&Karrie, It's nice to know that i'm not alone on this one. It's really frustrating at times, but thanks to both of you.mom2carloJust wondering if any of your kids do this.Carlo was obsessed with action figures and that's it. wouldn't play with trucks, cars, etc. but i've notice latley he's really not even playing with those anymore. he just wants to be outside swinging or riding his bike, but when he's inside he just walks around the house carring his pirate sword, looking a the fish tank, but not really playing with anything.Sorry if this doesn't make sense. i tend to ramble at times. thanks again. mom2carloBoy, are we in that SAME boat!! Over the last two months or so, DS has been doing the same thing. The only way I can get him to play with any of his toys is to direct him myself. Otherwise he will run around the house jumping on the couches, flipping the lights on and off, grabbing items out of the kitchen drawers and waving them, etc. I wish I could offer some advice; my son just started a full-day preschool program for kids on the spectrum, so he's now at school almost all day which is GREAT for him. They are so busy at school, he doesn't have time to do any inappropriate play. Unfortunately, it's difficult when he gets home because if I'm not on top of him ALL the time, he'll revert to wandering aimlessly and doing the things I mentioned.
Sorry I can't be more help, but I just wanted to let you know that we are there, too!!

Adam has times where he runs around aimlessly too. I redirect him also when he does this and he will usually comply.
