She is pointing!! | Autism PDD

Share

First she was in the bath and pointed to her cup on the counter. Guess she just couldnt take my hand and lead me to it. Then later that night we were out eating and she really wanted to leave and she would point to the door! This is good right?? We are getting somewhere!

Downside--I have noticed a few things she has been doing that could be stims??

-she wiggles her fingers all the time, she will touch the tip of each one to her thumb. She does this usually if excited or has to wait for something.

-also she will flap her arms if excited or angry.

-she always has been 'touchy' when I am changing her diaper but a few times in the past week I have found her spread out with her hand down her diaper. This usually happens after she wanders off to herself or while watching a movie...also when I am holding her on my hip she kinda rocks up and down, its strange...

So, is she just being a 2yr old? Or could these be stims?

THANKS!!~~Nicole

Not only that, the finger-to-thumb thing is what we were ADVISED by an OT to have DS do, to help develop fine motor!  She is self-teaching!!!

Oh and the er, self-stimulation ... welcome to the world of HUMAN SEXUALITY.  I am beginning to believe Freud really dropped the ball -- there is NO such thing as  the latent period!

And NT kids can have stims tooo

Cool!  Great on the pointing, and I agree, the rest is pretty typical.  Jase is sort of touchy that way himself, especially during a diaper change, but other times as well.

Jase does something very similar with his fingers, but it's definitely a stim for him, because he'll also switch up the types of finger movements, but they are almost always when he is stressed, or he puts the fingers right in front of his face.  He's definitely got a lot of visual stims, my boy!  LOL

Pointing = Yay! Any new forms communication are good.

Touching = Well... it happens It's fairly normal for any kid, ASD or not, and she should get over it once she's had her fill of it.

In any case she's adorable. stickboy2639316.7287615741As far as fine motor skills both ST and OT said she is above and beyond for what is expected in her age group.

Great on the pointing!!

Karrie
