I assume that the same type of dr's who decide what the safe level of other things in your body  for example what the safe level of cholesterol is. There are safe levels for everything in your body.   As for your daughter testing the same as the neighbors daughter well I don't believe that for a minute.  Afterall everyones body is different.  It is true that some children with autism have low levels of mercury.  I am certainly not saying that ALL children have autism because of mercury.  I am saying that my son has high levels and once these levels are lower I believe and so does the dr. that he will be able to function better.

As for chelation and who monitors the functions of the body.  My sons dr will be the one to monitor him.  In 30 days he will go for testing to be sure that everything is going well.  And he gets vitamins and minerals that is to help with the chelation and keep his body balanced.  I would never and I don't think any of the rest of us would take our children to a dr who said do this or that and then left us on our own to see what happened.

Hi all, well we are back from VA.  And I tell you I do not plan on EVER going on a plane trip with Matthew alone again.  I have never seen him act that way.  He was so uncontrollable in the airport and on the plane.  He was screaming and when I say screaming I mean screeeeaaaaming.  Everytime I would say anything to him he would scream at the top of his lungs.  And he even pulled my hair and slapped at me a couple times.  He's never been violent before.  Once an older gentleman said very loudly that I needed to "put a sock in it"  Of course I told him I wished I could put a foot in his mouth.

Anyway the trip was worth it.  I absolutely loved the doctor, she was wonderful.  She spent over 2 hours with Matthew going over everything.  And after reading his blood and hair analysis told me that Matthew has high mercury and lead poisoning

but hey, now you know!

i so dread finding out if keith is glutton allergic!

wow, more challenges ahead for you, but a very positive experience w/ the dr, and a supportive, informative experience.

hope things look up, kate

Glad to hear it went so well. I live in Virginia about 2 hrs from RIchmond.  I may try to get an appointment with her.  We have an appt. in Charolettesville Va at a place called Kluge.  I have heard mixed emotions about it from others.

Wow, about learning about mercury and lead.  I know that plane rides are hard on me...I have anxiety issues and crowds. Airports are so full of people with purpose and that type of eye contact is not like the casual dining expeirence.  People just won't give you the time of day in an airport.  Its also so active and a large and loud. I am sure my Anna would freak out at an airport too.

Glad to hear you were able to get so much help. (:

Question - when they say high levels of mercury - what is the acceptable range for children and who establishes those ranges?

I'm curious because I've asked a couple doctors about it and they told me that while some people can test for levels there is such a range for people.  I was told that if I tested my daughter and her typical neighbor that is the same age, you could get the same results and it's inconclusive.  Some children that are tested have low levels of toxic metals and still have autism.  This is why I'm on the fence about testing my daughter - plus she's very mild PDD-NOS and I don't know if it would even help her or not...yada yada that's something else...

Also, during chelation, who oversees the monitoring of the body's organs?  The reason I ask is because in school I learned about chelation in organic chemistry  and it was described as very dangerous - not to mention in my toxicology classes I was told that it has to be highly supervised because it can pose dangers to vital organs in the body.

These are definitely textbook issues - so I'm curious about the monitoring from people that are actually doing it.
