Has anyone had an MRI done on their child to check for possible tumors or anything like that?
It was suggested to me but I'm a little reluctant.
My daughter mixes up her sentences and cannot generalize proper grammar rules. It's almost as if she has to memorize sentence by sentence which tense of a verb to use. I was told that most parents of autistic children get an MRI to "be on the safe side" and make sure.
This is just an informal survey. Thanks. :)

My son has had two mri's done. Both by different Neuro because of his large heard if they measured everyone head on my side of the family they would have discovered this was familal marcocephely (large head) I was told by the neurologist diagnosis it was to rule out other possible causes of his speech delay and so on. We had to put him to sleep for both.
I felt the second mri was for the same reason and was worthless but the neuro wanted some explanation for his bighead beside it runs in the family.

MY son had mris, cts ,ultrasounds, and x-rays The mri was for possible tummor which was not there the ultrasound was of his kidney which one is turned the ct was for the live they thought it was in large that was not true and the x-rays is for his back he has scolisesMelanie,
Logyn had a MRI.....to rule out brain damage because the umbilical cord had been wrapped around her head. Everything was fine, but the drug she was given to knock her out made her "drunk"......it was horrible. It was like fighting a baby tiger....I believe she was 3 at the time and I had no idea just how strong she really was. The nurse said that Autistic children for some reason acted that way with that drug. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the drug, but you can ask your doc.

jack has had several MRI's but not for ASD i hate him having them because he has to be put to sleep and the whole thing is a massive trauma for all concerned,he knows whats coming now but this is a kid that has been poked and probbed to within a ince of his life poor baby.My take on this would be unless there is a clear cut reason for it then don't do it

My son has had MRI's because he was born with spina bifida. He is missing part of his corpus callosum and has a lipoma (benign tumor) but his neuro said this has nothing to do with him being on the spectrum.Thank you everyone - I never had a feeling my daughter had a tumor or anything - but then it's the lingering guilt of "what if.." and I didn't do anything about it...
my innards say no and I appreciate all your responses - it helped me to confirm my feelings on the matter!!!

hey Melanie, my son Carlo(5,pdd-nos) has had 3 mri, but not for autism, but because he also suffers from a seizure disorder. btw, welcome to the board imust of missed your first post. take care.mom2carloAlot of autistic kids do not have mri's done. The results can be inconclusive. At one time I had a mri done because they thought I might have a tumor . The reason they did that is I was having very severe headaches and they wanted to rule out a tumor. Even an open mri machine is very noisy. And I know I have had an open mri and a closed mri. I didn't like either of them.
