oh one question my dr prescribed something called efalex for my daughter its some kind of fish oil i was wondering does anyone use this and has their child benifitted from taking it??Hi Amanda, I live in Western Australia and am mum to Jacob who is also 2.5 years. He was diagnosed with Autism in May this year. I am constantly learning new things everday to do with ASD, and Jacob has certainly kept me on my toes in the short time that he has been in our lives, he has brought us so much happiness and along with that plenty of dispair but I could never imagine life without him.

We first approached the G.P in October last year with some initial concerns that Jacob could be displaying some symptoms of Autism, my Mum was the first to notice some perculiar behaviourisms so I acted promptly after being told that early intervention was the key to a somewhat normal life in a majority of cases.

Jacob was referred to a peadiatrician and a neurologist.
The peadiatrician performed the Griffiths Scale test and noted milestones and development and was also a witness to a brief absent seizure triggered by the fluro lights in her office. She decided Jacob needed to be assessed by the State Child Development Centre, there he was assessed by a multi-disciplinery team who have implemented the strictest criteria in the Country when diagnosing within the Autism Spectrum.. The team was made up of a Peadiatrician, Psychologist, Speech Pathologist, Social Worker. Audiology tests and a PAL program was also done by the centre. After a 7 month wait to be assessed by SCDC Jacob got his official diagnosis. In that time he had an E.E.G done in January and a M.R.I in April requested by the Neurologist, he also was tested for Prader-Willi Syndrome and Fragile X with a negative result.

We are currently approaching the three providers of Early Intervention in our state, we are exploring what therapies they use and what would be appropriate for Jacob. I am not sure what else to write at the moment, but if you think I might be able to help with some of your questions I would be glad to try and answer to the best of my knowledge. Take care.Hi Amanda, I'm from Perth WA. There is a board based in Brisbane. Even though you are from NSW you may find it helpful.  http://groups.msn.com/AutisticSpectrumDisord ers

I have 2 with Autism. my youngest has done extremely well. My oldest still has many of the symptoms but a high IQ and he also has language.

I hope that the appointments go well.

Hi Amanda

I'm not a parent but a special Aid teacher for a 4 year old ASD I care for when he attends a mainstream preschool 1 day a week. I have found that even though he can not talk he seems to understand the picture cards on what is happing during the day. Is Jessie going to a Preschool for Special needs children where they can help her etc.  I will have to try and get Lukes mum to join and she tell you exactly what she had to go through. he was diagnosed in Sydney, even though he/I live 3 hours away.

Darlene

hi Cheryl,

Thought you and any other Western Australian Parents/Family would be interested in the following group made up of around 14 West Aussies with children diagnosed with ASD.

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/WAASupport/

You need to be granted access to the board by the moderator, and you can do that by joining the group.. no jessi isnt in preschool yet altho the ped did recommened strongly that she attend to aquire social skills and to get her used to being arounbd other kids.. she only seems to "play" with other children if they have something she wants.. so she doesnt really want the child she just wants the object..we live in sydney also, but i feel really over protective of jessi right now i dont want her to go, i dont want to leave her :(

Hi Amanda,

Wen Luke started NOAHS ARK mum stayed with him for all the 4 hours he was their and eventually has he was use to the place she felt comfortable in leaving him with the carers. What is best jessie is up to you, because your her mother and no one could tell you otherwise. :)

Hi I also live in Sydney, near Penrith. And I have a 9 year old boy with High Functioning Autism. He was diagnosed at Westmead Children's Hospital when he was 3 with Semantic Pragmatic Disorder. He had very little speech, no eye contact, poor social skills. But was a very plasid baby. (The golden child). Its been a long hard road, with speech therapy, occupational therapy, gluten free, casein free diet. Audio Intergration Therapy, Sensory Intergration. He is so much better now. He goes to Mater Dei and is very happy. I have a support group if your interested?

Take care.

Regards,

Trish
