Gut issues... | Autism PDD

Does your sister-in-law say why she thinks he's constipated?  If it's on the basis of what his stool looks like, here's a chart with drawings (not photos) of the 7 types of stool.  Types 1 and 2 are formed but constipated.  Types 3 and 4 are healthy, formed stools.  Types 5, 6 and 7 are loose, watery stools.

If it's on the basis of behavior, such as arching his back or pushing against objects with his belly, you might want to talk to the pediatrician about it.

According to one study, autistic children can be constipated without showing the usual signs.  They concluded that the severity of constipation (for example megarectum) was hard to predict from the usual indicators of stool frequency, soiling, abdominal pain, etc.  A radiograph was more accurate.

Good luck with everything.

Thanks Shell,
I can think of about 2 times so far that he hasn't gone for three days and one of those times he was in the hospital.  No swollen belly or pasty looks.

i would say three days

adul;t or child

after a couple of days poo starts to fement inside the gut

it then causes poo leaks even though the child has not tryed to poo.

try giving brown bread and juice and fruit

a sign to look for for constipation is swelling of the belly and a pasty look.

hope this helps love shell

I know this is going to sound silly but how to you know if your child has gut issues?

My ds is 2, non-verbal, sensory issues and pdd-nos. Despite all that  I am happy to say that he is a wonderful eater.  He is not picky.  He loves salmon, chicken, yogurt, applesauce, and many other things. He will try anything.

He  will poop once a day and it usually takes him about 3-5 minutes to poop and he doesn't really have to work very hard at it.  The reason that I am asking this question is because my SIL (a nurse) thinks that he is consitpated.  I have worked with preschool children for many years and I don't think that he is consitpated.  I would consider him to be consitpated if he didn't go for a few days but he goes every day.

What would you consider a child who is consitpated?  Also how do you determine if your child has gut issues?

Thank you in advance.
