Finally A DX!!! 8 hours later.... | Autism PDD

The MR at 3 years of age is alittle to early yes. However, they gave us the option of mild delay or mild MR. The psych informed us she was not comfortable with giving him this dx after only seeing him once. We asked for the mild MR (and yes had to fill out another huge questionaire) because of how poorly his speech is. They rated him with a 13 month old funtional use of words. Our area education informed me that they did not plan on giving him anymore time even with a PDD dx. I have little time as it is so with the mild mr dx we get medicaid. Which we are thankful for as our med bills are off the charts.

He did qualify for the mild mr dx and if he does than why would they not give it to someone if it opens up more doors to help.(he has to be retested in 1 yr) With 3 children we need it. The funny thing about this is that the psych said she would recommend private treatment and to not rely on our area educ services. Well private will put us in a huge financial burden as I already had to quite my job which was 50% of our income.

The truth is really hitting home today as we see more issues that they pointed out. We honestly were not expecting him to be 12-15 months delayed. We were thinking along the lines of 6 months give ot take. The IQ test was done very well and the psych was amazing. She got him to do things that we have not been able to. Thanks for the support.

I am happy that you finally have a diagnoses so that you can move ahead with your services but I am sad for you that it has to be this way.  Good luck and take care of yourself.   happy for you that the dx is now out of the way and you can get on with things, the MR thing, I was under the impression that 2.5 is a bit young to say... Of course correct me if I'm wrong.

Take care.

I must say that the IQ test was very good. We have to retest in one year as MR is not a standing condition. We hope with all the services that we get will help him. I told the psych that our goals our for our son to still go to college and live on his own. He loves electronics...

maybe a future Bill Gates?? The OT said it best with children with
PDD....they are like behavioral roller coasters...one day you think they are
cured, one day they like a certain food, and the next they show there true
colors and dislike the food they liked yesterday. How true is that!

Hmmm...yeah, that sounds vaguely familiar!!

Glad you can finally now move on w/ services. I imagine you are very
exhausted!! Take a bath, sip some wine or warm tea. What a day... Take
care!!!Elle2239311.7038310185

Carter was given a dx today at the Univ of Iowa. What a great experience. He was truely himself. 8 hours of OT, Dev. Ped., Speech, Psych, and social worker. Wow....my brain hurts. Anyway he was given a PDD-NOS w/ mild retardation. The OT also said he has alot of sensory issues that need to be addressed. He was a 13 month age for functional lang. however a 19 month old age for vocab. (out of the 150 words he knows only 10 of them make sense and have meaning to him.) That was there biggest concern. The IQ test was not verbal however he had to use a lot of interactive play.

I would love to call the lady who came into our home 3 months ago and said your son has a behavioral issue he does not have AUTISM.

Now the journey begins with private services. The OT said it best with children with PDD....they are like behavioral roller coasters...one day you think they are cured, one day they like a certain food, and the next they show there true colors and dislike the food they liked yesterday. How true is that!

We have been expecting this for 4 months. We had our time to freak out. Still alittle shocked with the MR dx however, we have strong hopes that this will no longer be an issue in a year. Thanks...the Baileys Haagen daz has helped!Seriously  - Chill out today
What a great attitude you have !

The MR may not stay ... my son is 5, and the doc said that he suspects mild MR, but because it is difficult to test an austistic child, he couldn't say for sure for at least another year.

I'm glad you are finally on the road to getting services!

I'd like to call that woman who said "behavioral issues" myself. grrr.Glad to hear it. i'm expecting the same for my son. Great attitude and role model for me!
