language question/3rd person | Autism PDD

Share

My four year old (who I am pretty sure is NT) started about three month
ago to refer to herself in the third person only. I keep trying to correct her
but it has not changed. She used to say "I" and noone else in our house
talks in the third person, so I am a little puzzled. I did a search on this
site and someone said that NT kids master prounouns at age 3. She has
no other signs of a regression but I guess since there is asd in the family
she might be at higher risk for language problems as well . Any ideas?I used to that too...I eventually just stopped doing it...I thought it was funny and more descriptive.

Does she watch Sesame Street?  Elmo does that.

My autistic son did that, too, until we focused on the issue at age 5.  We played dumb.  "Johnny wants milk," he'd say (you know I never use his real name on the forum).  "Who's Johnny?" we'd ask.  He'd then say "Me!"  "Oh, then you need to say 'I want milk'".

Good luck with everything.

Good point - I had forgotten that my beloved sesame street friends did that.
