voices from the spectrum | Autism PDD

Share

I am just reading this book 'voices from the spectrum' (Cindy Ariel, Robert
Naseef). It is a variety of people (parents, siblings, people with asd)
writing about their experiences. And the section written by people with
asd has really been giving me some new insights into my son. It is so
different hearing a person discribe something vs hearing the
disconnected medical terminology.
On man discribed how hard it is sometimes for him to understand where
he ends and his environment begins. He often finds himself echoing or
joining into other people's sounds or movements or moods. My son gets
really caught by movement and if I stand somwhere and a stranger walks
by he will start to walk with the stranger. Now I undertand why !!!
Another man explained how seeing the detail before understanding a big
picture leads to his going on and on about his special interests without
every getting to the point (or what a NT would consider the point). Totally
made sense. I am not putting this nearly as well as he did.
Anyway, I am thankful for all the literature written by people with asd, it
really helps me understand.
Has anyone else found books or articles written by people with asd that
they would like to recommend?
I might add a few later too.

Micki, maybe you could add this to our book topic:

Cindy Ariel and Robert Naseef are sometimes interviewed by www.autism.about.com, and I've been favorably impressed.  Naseef has a son with autism.

Thanks for telling us about the book.

I have just finished 'send in the idiots' and thoroughly enjoyed it too. Very eloquent and simple, provides great insights into the world of ASD adults with varying severity of the condition. I would highly recommend it.
