Anyone seen Dr. Greenspan? | Autism PDD

Share

Hi, we have an appointment with Dr. Greenspan and we wondering if anyone has already seen him. We are curious, what's his beside manner like, do you like him? The appt is actually only for 1.5 hours. I can't imagine how a dx can be made in just 1.5 hours spent observing a child, even if you are as highly qualified as he is.

I have started reading one of his books, The Special Needs Child. He totally eliminates the use of global labels like autism, Aspergers, PDD, etc....says that it does a child injustice because ASD children are too different from one another many times than they are similar. Read "The Boy Who Loved Windows," it's a mom's first-hand account of
Floortime & very detailed on several appts w/ Greenspan. While she
obviously is a BIG supporter of Floortime & Greenspan, I feel her accounts of
the appts are still very real. I think she felt like Kajoli mentions,
overwhelmed & intimitated at times, the weight of big expectations, but it
appears to have paid off for her son.

Keep us posted!

We haven't seen him, but he trained our consultant and she raves about him. You should also read "Engaging Autism". We use the floortime model (along with VB/ABA) and my son has progressed so much. Recently we have seen great progress in play and social skills. We pretty much use Greenspan's model when interacting with our son at all times.

I think a pro could make a diagnosis that quickly. Maybe there will be more follow-up. If you can get started with Floortime that would be great!

I too, am jealous. Good luck. I want to hear about it! How long did you have to wait for an appointment?

Wow -- a CELEBRITY AUTISM SHRINK!  I am jealous!

I wonder if he is as charismatic and persuasive in person as in writing???? Dying to hear!

Oooh I am jealous - I have been downloading his free podcasts and I am so impressed with him

Though 1.5 hours does seem little

Do update us after your appointment - one of he moms said she was annoyed after meeting him becasue he seemed to have such high expectations from parents but she could not compalin after she saw all the results becasue her son defied ALL expectations

KajoliT:  Please tell me about his free podcasts?  How do you find out about them?  Thank you!

I just download itunes ( its free ) do a search under podcasts - look for his old podcasts - the 2004ones are the best IMO - the new ones all seem to be about adult relationships

I just download his podcasts and burn each one on a separate CD!( each podcast will take up a whole CD )

This way I finally managed to listen to - floortime what it is and what it isnt, Helping Children Engage etc  just in my commute in the car to work and back - I really find like I have to utilize every minute I am away from work and family

and you can find it  on the icdl website

I think you can get the podcasts here.

I had to wait almost 5 months for an appointment. That turned me off at first. I was desperate to get some immediate help. But finally they called me.

I've been doing lots of floor time for the past year now. We have seen lots of improvement too, but there are still a couple outstanding issues with my son. I did hear that Greenspan expects a ton of effort on the part of parents - floortime that is almost done constantly throughout the day or something like that.

I think it's amazing that someone of his stature is still practicing actively.  You're lucky.  Let us know allllllll about it afterwards.
