any Aussie or Kiwi families ? | Autism PDD

Hi Thanks for the reply ,my dh is akiwi and is over there for work and to get to know his side of the family abit better. we will all be over there at christmas. we are moving to Auckland . Ive had alook at the national autism association website and the education departments site and things look okay. i think it will be a very big change for us. Does your little one go to early intervention ? are there many services available? our ds is Hf but so of course we get a lot of he isnt that bad and a lot of other insentive remarks. do you find there is much understanding by your community for you and your childs needs? well i would like to hear any advice you have or any one you think would be good to contact. where about are you located? thanks again for the reply

It's uncanny that you're moving over here when we've been thinking about Melbourne but with all the water drying up I'm a little put off to be honest.  It just goes to show that nowhere is perfect huh?

As far as the understanding by the community I can only talk for where I'm living at present as there still seems much ignorance about autism and people still expect to see a boy in the corner rocking and acting like how it's portrayed in the movies.  I too get that glazed look from folk who think my boy is just naughty and perhaps I'm a poor mother!  There are some great folk though who have children on the spectrum that offer support and you'd meet them at the coffee groups that run regularly.  Feel free to contact me if u have any more queries.

I'm in Australia too - just outside of Geelong - about 1/2 hour drive from Melbourne.

LOL @ Lord of the Rings reference!

Have not been to NZ yet - doing a conference there early next year - cant wait!

hi all am new here
was wondering if there are any parents in australia or New Zealand. we are moving to NZ at the end of the year and would love to connect with some kiwi fams.
we have a7 year old HFA and a3 year old NT so far but we will see. any contact would be great!its so nice to see im not alone ineither country .i am always on the net searching for info so it was only by chance that i came cross this site. thanks somuch for your posts! Plenty of water here in Tasmania! Not sure how well the services compare
tho, my DS is HF, and we got our dx when he was 10 ( long story) so I know
nothing about early intervention, except for what I hear from Allegra... which
isn't always great Welcome to the board!
water or asd services ,let me see .
ive heard Victoria has great services but i guess the grass is always greener .my ds gets max aide time and other services that i know we wont get in NZ but the lifestyle will suit our family.
we also have a NT ds who is hasnt started school yet so it will be intresting to see how it all compares.
for all the Ausssies I bet your still living the high life off the 0. That almost covered our o.t this term ,Mr Howard needs to stop being so generous with all his (whoops our)money.
some days i like to pretend that we live in a world where all asd children get the health ,dental, phsyc, dietary requiments they need with out any hassle at no cost ! wouldnt that be wonderful .

Services in Victoria are not good - or maybe its just in Geelong. Lachlan so far has had a 2 hour playgroup for the last 10 weeks. We have to share th OT and St between 10 families on the day. We perhaps get.oh.maybe 5 monutes of their time each.

I pay for everything privately.

LOL @ $ 600. We lived it up for about 20 seconds on that one!
