Micki - That teacher should be reported. She is not a good teacher and certainly not well-meaning. You do not tell ANY child that they have peed their pants in front of other kids - that is demeaning and disrespectful of the child. That is borderline verbal abuse in my opinion!

Amberwaves - I really would write a letter, but perhaps wait 24 hours as woodsman suggested. It helps to calm down a bit. Or, you can write the letter and look at it again in 24 hours and either do a LOT of editing or start over. I would put something in there that you are not comfortable having anyone but a PT or licensed physician working with her on toe-walking as you can do damage to a child if they are taught the wrong way to walk. That is why they HAVE PTs right? I would definitely address this issue and call an emergency IEP meeting if you have to.

Good luck on this and big hugs as well!

My goodness - how frustrating

I WOULD GO IN AND SEE THE TEACHER

SHE SHOULD NOT BE SAYING THNGS LIKE THAT ANYWAY HER PERSONAL COMMENTS ARE NOT NEEDED

YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PROVE ANYTHING AT ALL

I HAVE AS AND FOUR OF MY CHILDREN ARE ON THE SPECTRUM

AND I WOULD NOT PUT UP WITH LOOSE COMMENTS FROMA TEACHER

HER FEET WILL BE THE FIRST SIGNS OF HER DISORDER THAT THEY SEE THEY WORK FROM THE FEET UP LOL

GO SEE YOU GP

TELL THEM YOU WOULD LIKE HER TO SIT AN A.D.O.S ASSESSMENT AND SIT A MULTY DICAPLINARY ASSESSMENT THIS WILL SAY YES OR NO TO A DX SHE WILL REFER YOU TO YOUR CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER AT YOUR HOSPITAL

PERHAPS THE LABEL WOULD HELP IN HER CASE

TRY TO HAVE A MEETING WITH THE HEAD

WRITE DOWN ALL YOUR CHILDS BEHAVIOURS AND WAYS AND SHOW THEM ASK THEM TO KEEP A COPY IN HER RECORDS

TELL THEM YOU ARE ASKING FOR AN ASSESSMENT FOR AUTISM AND COULD THE SCHOOL KEEP A DIARY OF HOW SHE IS AT SCHOOL

THIS IS A LINK TO APPLY FOR A STATEMENT ONLINE UK

spectrummum39309.6717708333spectrummum thank you. She does have an apt in Sept. by developmental ped and another by the childrens hosp. in Oct.  The school was sposed to check her but they didn't list any of her habbits but 2 or give me a sheet to fill out.  It makes me upset that they're all of a sudden trying to change her habbits before the test.
My ds was told that his throat-clearing tick was naughty and to stop. I
was told that his taking of his shoes and rubbing them on the floor was
'distracting him" (transferrence anyone) and to tie the shoes to his leggs.
When he went down a wet slide he was told in front of his class that he
had peed his pants and needed to go home. All this by a teacher with
20+ years in special education.
Many teachers are well-meaning (well most anyway) but the majority has
no clue about autism or what is a symtom or what function a symptom
has for the kid.
Maybe sent a friendly letter saying that you appreciate the attention
given to her toewalking and that you have worried about it too since it
was one of the red flaggs of asd. But that you are not comfortable having
them work with her on any of her autistic traits before a proper IEP is in
place. The IEP should address which of the issues are going to be worked
on and in which way and that you are looking forward to working with
them towards that end. Something like that,. Keep a copy for your file
too.

LOL

THEY SAID MY SON HAD NO PROBLEMS AT SCHOOL AT ALL

AND WHEN THE EDUCATION SENT FOR HIS RECORDS HIS PROBLEMS WERE THREE PAGES LONG

WHAT THEY TELL YOU AND WHAT THEY TELL THE LEA ARE TWO DIFFERANT THINGS HUN

THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CHANGE HER

AUTISM IS NOT DIAGNOSED ON BEHAVIOURS IT IS DIAGNOSED ON THE TRIAD OF IMPAIRMENTS IF YOUR CHILD HAS THE TRIAD AUTISM OR ASPERGERS WILL  BE GIVEN THE BEHAVIOURS ARE A POINTER FOR THE PROFFESIONALS BUT NOT DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA.

GET HOLD OF THE SENCO AT YOUR DAUGHTERS SCHOOL TELL HER WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON AND ASK HER TO KEEP AN EYE ON HER.THE SENCO IS THE FIRST PERSON THE HOSPITAL WILL CONTACT.

DONT LET THEM WORRY

I USED TO SHOUT ALL THE TIME

NOW I JUST QUOTE THE SEN CODE OF PRACTICE LOL

THEY ROLL THERE EYES TO THE HEAVENS WHEN I COME IN LOL

AND FUNDING SADLY IS A POINT

THEY DONT GET PAID FOR THE EXTRA WORK THEY HAVE TO PUT IN AND UNTILL A DX AND STATEMENT ARE GIVEN YOU WILL ONLY GET THE BASICS SAD BUT TRUE.

YOU DO THERE HEADS IN IF YOU STAY CALM TRY IT LOL

I LNOW YOU WANT TO EXPLODE AND THAT IS OK

BUT YOU HAVE TO SHOUT FOR YOUR DAUGHTER WITHOUT YELLING TO LOUD

LOVE SHELL

My ds was told that his throat-clearing tick was naughty and to stop

I WOULD MOST CERTAKINLY REPORT WHOEVER TOLD THE CHILD THIS

NAUGHTY NO NECESSATY

THESE KIDS DO BEHAVIOURS BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO

THEY DO THEM TO FEEL SAFE SELF COMFORT AND CALM

HOW DARE THEY SAY THAT GRRRRRRRRRRR

This really makes me mad. I went to many shoe stores to find the right shoes for my daughter. She has very wide feet. Keep in mind she has always walked on her toes* and this hads nonthing to do her shoes or wide feet bla.

My daughter walks into the door right after school, pulls her shoe off and puts it againist her foot and goes see way to big. I was pissed. I asked her who said that and she said teacher so and so. I bet they saw her walking on her toes, had some how try to say not a form of autism and make up an excuse. Does anyone have to deal with this crap.
Should I write a letter to that teacher explaining it has nonthing with her shoes or wait and have the Dr. write down about her toe walking. Today, they gave her special lessions on her walking regular at school. (I know bec. now she is walking sliding her feet to the bottom of the floor like an old lady.) SHE EVEN TOLD ME THEY'RE SHOWING HER HOW TO WALK  I got her toe walking on vidoetape anyways.
I almost feel like there try to break her pdd/aspegers habits right before her autism test. Anyways remember the school says she has signs but  doesn't have it , so why are they all of a sudden working on her feet and not telling me?
She has an apt in Spt and another in Oct. She does have a form of autism, I'm thinking aspergers or pdd.
amberwaves39309.6413078704hmmm... i did not realize one went to school to learn how to walk. It nice that they r helping her, especally cause the other kids may pick up on the way shes walking. But, at the same time, its not up to them to 'fix' her. I was always told, wait 24 hours b4 writing a letter .

Good luck, i hope u can get your point across.I think you should. I know that my brother has eye ticks and his Teacher told him maybe if he stopped blinking so much he could focus. We went to the head of the school and his ticks were never critised again..... Good LuckI tell staff no rude comments are needed from them! I even complained cause the staff at this school has no awareness on fine motor problems effecting school. Lots of staff need to shut up since they are unaware of the problems se kids can face.

1 year Daniel had a teacher who chose to demean him in class for being unable to do a writing task. He has writtem expression problems! She claimed he just chose not to do  the work. She even said this in front of his peers. I wish I could of wiped her butt!

She is a now the Superindendent's secertery instead!4 other mom's hated this lady also!

I don't blame you for being frustrated.  I've gotten some comments from school personnel connected with my child's clothing, and it makes me very defensive, makes me feel like they think I'm not a good mom.  My son's school's comments were mostly good-intentioned, but they don't know my son or his condition well enough to always understand what the real issue is.

If your daughter's heels don't slip out of her shoes, they are not too big.  End of story.

Toe-walking is best dealt with by a physical therapist in my opinion, so if the school isn't willing to cough up for a PT then they should shut up.

Good luck with everything.

Yes.  PT.  Put in writing today a request to the special ed administration that your daughter receive a full physical therapy evaluation at school.  The MUST do this and they must implement the recommendations.  Once your daughter is getting PT regularly, the teacher can be made to understand the issues by the therapist. Also, the therapist may have suggestions for you about your daughter's shoes.  They may be right for her, they may not be.  A PT will be able to tell you this better than a shoe salesman.Just Wanted to write that because of my son's toe walking he has started to get PT at school after i hounded them to give him a eval. He has really helped alot along with buying him special shoes to help correct the problem.. I would ask for a eval asap..    My daughter had days 2 days off from school. I was still cooling off after posting after Thurs before I could write a letter....The teacher wrote a letter home, telling my daughters shoes are too big and she wants to buy her a pair. OMG, were not poor and those shoes are new! I wrote a letter back telling her that toe walking has nonthing to do with her shoes. Also added those words a child with forms of autism walk on there toes. I also wrote a letter to the resource teacher asking for a pt. evl. since she is falling and toe walking at school.. I also told them, I'm having her Dr write them a letter about her toe walking. She'll get her pdd or asperger title in Sept  by a Dev. Ped. amberwaves39314.7278703704The teacher wants to buy her a new pair of shoes?  That's absurd!  Downright unprofessional, I'd say.  Is she new to the profession? I know she was there last year.  My mom told me their (school) evil and I need to be careful.  She said they might try to turn me in for child abuse bec. of her toe walking. I hope they enjoy her Dr. report/letter in Sept. I agree with what was said that the teacher did NOT need to say this to a child. I would definitely report this.

I would have been pissed too, but I have a bad habit of not being able to hold my tongue and keep my mouth shut when I am really mad. I am working on that.

Good luck!
