R had a few words and lost them and has not gained them back - he has made progress in a lot of other areas though - PECS - signing more , handleading, pointing - other supllementary ways of communicating are increasing The lost of words have nothing to do with the starting of ABA that I know of..sometimes behaviors get worse in the beginning as a means of esape. Hopefully the therapy will help her regain them and more..with time. It took months for Sarah to start communicating new words..it takes time. Keep the ABA and pecs/pics and modeling as much as you can...always expose her to verbal and pictures of words..it will come:) Good luck!
Tell them:)
They want to see her master it at least 6-7x before they move on and if she does it well one without prompting but not the next...well she is going to have to keep doing it until it is consistently mastered..
There is a means to the madness you are watching...her brain is learning oh okay if I just do this..then they will change and do something else...it takes tons of repetition to become hardwired in the brain:)
But if you feel it is truely something she does perfectly well and they are wasting time..TELL them:)
Good luck!
P.S.
Ya know Texas just passed that law starting this month for kids to be covered for ABA, speech/ OT/PT through insurance if the child is under age 5 :) This is the first time in history for insurance to do that here:)
hint hint!
Please keep this in mind when you talk to her or around her...she hears everything and is processing it whether you realize it or not!
God, I swear if you were close to me.....I could help you so much more! And I could get rid of some things..toys, clothes..advice..
Shelley - If Dallas is in the cards again, U will want to run away from there bec I will want/need advice.. ALL THE TIME!!
ANother question - The ABA therapists do the SAME DARN THING OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN>>.. is this how it is suppossed to be?? And the tasks are SO boring...... stuff she already knows!! And they are all praise for her bec they think she "did it"..... See where I am going with this?
She has not picked up ANY new skill and it has already been 3 months now.... I am so scared!Another thing to add onto what Shelley & Kajoli said: talk, talk, talk to your
dd! A mom I came to know who's dd had Rett Syndrome told me this when
dd was 15 mos old or so. She told me to keep talking & having one-sided
conversations w/ dd. That she could hear & understand me, whether she
appeared to or not. It was so difficult, getting nothing at all back for so
long. But, after almost 2 yrs of ST (flashcards, pecs, & signs, along w/ all
that talk, talk, talking!!), words came. We'll never know what truly makes
one verbal or not...but I can say I tried all I could, and I really do feel our
'chats' helped.
Just curious is the ABA sessions my daughter has been having is what is typical... My dd turned two (2 weeks ago) and has NO words.. she had VERY few words (probably 4 words) till very recently but has lost them even AFTER ABA started!! Is this normal??
