Echolalia while playing with toys | Autism PDD

yes my daughter is into that too. She acted out the whole story of "Peter and the Wolf" when it was read at school. She even mimiced the moves of the charactors....very entertaining (:

She will sit for long periods of time at the table w/her little girl and toys and act out things she has done with friends.

Anna also talks like this "Anna says "mommy" and mommy says "No Anna don't go in there."    This is how she talks to me, as if telling a story from a book about something we did or something she did w/someone else.

Sally this is a GOOD thing!! My nt daughter is 3 1/2 and she does this too. She will have her little Dora figures and pretend to do the things she watches on Dora with them. Nick does the same things with his crocodiles and sharks in the pool he does what he sees on the movies like Nemo and Little Mermaid. Encourage her to do this sit down and join her and play with her this is great!!!!

I was wondering if it was considered good, bad or indifferent that lately when my dd engages in "scripting" from the movies she is usually playing with some toys and sorta acting it out with them. Sometimes she even replaces the name from the movie with the toy she is playing with (so as an example, if she is playing with a toy farmer, she'll say "No, Farmer, stay there." instead of the line from the movie exactly which is "No, Lady, stay there.") Not exactly branching out but not exactly staying to script either. Right now she'd doing Dumbo and she has all her stuffed elephants out and a little doll who represents the mouse and a toy firefighter who represents the circus announcer and she moves them around according to who's talking, etc. She always uses the same toys to represent the same people. It seems like play except for of course the reciting! She also does this with books, has certain toys that represent certain characters and then picks them up accordingly as we read along. She also has been pretending to put some of her toys to bed, to have a bath, go potty, etc. That seems like pretend play to me except of course it's always the same thing, said the same way in the same order

But, heck yeah, I think it sounds fab!  I guess I'd try to break up the order, write your own story with the same characters but different plot, change up the "script" lines with different emphasis or change one word.  I think it's great!  I'll be curious to see what others think.

Yeah!!

Sallys,

This is GREAT!!  YES....it's pretend play.  It may not be the exact same way that other children pretend play but it is what it is!!!  That is a great strength to have.  And her echolalia is starting to be used as functional language which is great!!  Adam uses his echolalia a lot for functional language too and it has really made him come along.  Just wanted to tell you how great I think this is!!  Take care,

Karrie
