GYMNASTICS~OH MY!!!! | Autism PDD

She went again last night..it is awesome..they do the uneven bars..the balancing beam..the horse..the trampoline..the rope swing..the mats..cartwheels, going on their hands for handstands...she did excellent again..I was exhausted from watching her...I am on the outside looking in through glass..but maybe I can sneak a picture of her next time before they yell at me:)

I think it is really going to help her with running too...they ran in big circles, jumped around in big circle..hopped on one foot in big circle...she needs this so bad! They did jumping jacks too..and a bunch more..hard to believe this class is only an hour!

She is a laid back ASD kiddo and not very active at all so this will help her hopefully.  She still runs with her hands swinging like wheelbarrows in the air but she is faster:)

Shelley - this is a huge step not just in terms of the sensory limits reached during during gym work, but socially as well. Above all - isn't it great just to do "kid' stuff for a change.

Good on you for taking her! Well done Mom!

I went to the local gymnastics place down the street today and they let Sarah try a class out for free.  She LOVED it..they did stretching, then followed each other and and did jumping on trampoline, rolling on downward pillar things..swinged on ropes..uneven bars..cartwheels, hopscotch..duck duck goose ect...she was exactly as peers and didnt stick out at all..I was so proud!

Thanks Kristy for encouraging this..she absolutely loves it!!!!  She is beside herself with joy and confidence right now...I just want to bottle it up. The only thing is moms/dads have to wait outside the gym and watch through glass:( This place is gigantic and looks like a kids dream obstacle course:) I quickly enrolled her 2x a week before the class fills up..it is only 7 kids per teacher:) I hope this will help with her strength, coordination and stamina.  I am so glad I took her there:) They had little 3 year old classes that were really small and looked fun too...and some mommy & me classes for younger ones:) Thanks for letting me share:)

That is fabulous for so many reasons...She'll be a superstar.Wonderful Shelley, Maybe she will meet a child that will become a friend.  Great! That is awesome!! My oldest does dance and wants to do cheer this year and Trinity tries to do cheers with her so I had been thinking of maybe a class for her, your story is filling me with hope that she can!! You'll have'ta get some pics and post 'em for us!!

Sarah is so beautiful and such an inspiration.  I am glad she likes the gymnastics!  Ali loves her dance.  I think she would like gymnastics but she is already hyper...I think gymnastics would make her over the edge.  Of course, if Ali asked to do any sport I would at least let her try.  As a child, I was never into any sport or activity, I was very anxious in social situations and the only one thing I ever desperatly wanted to try was ice skating...but my mother would not let me...she said I would get hurt....I begged for 7 years until I was too old to really start out and be able to go anywhere with it.  Anyway, I think these kind of activities are good for kids on many levels.

I tried my dd in gymnastics awhile back but she wasn't ready. She's a little older now and is better at things like waiting her turn etc so I'm thinking of giving it another try.  The biggest problem was that she only wanted to do the trampoline.  I'm going to ask if we can try a class for free or even just pay for one instead of committing to a session.   That's great, Shelley. Did you notice any boys there?  Were the groups co-ed?  I'm sure the girls would like it (though with their gross motor delays and general skittishness, they might not be able to keep up in a group lesson) and my son would probably like it, too.  Fred..they had 2 boys:) and they had a ball! The instructors were very good at keeping the kids focused..they had Sarah give them high 5's each time she did anything and of course she had to put both her hands way up high like the olympian that she is and pose:) Too cute!Shelly, My son LOVES his classes at Gymkana so much that he has Actually ASKED us for his 6th birthday party to be held there!

Our place requires his TSS to be there so that he can be helped if his behavior becomes an issue, It never has. He follows his instructors' requests and he loves the heck out of the trampoline, vaulting, paralell bars and all of the other activities. He is an active, athletic little guy so he has found a place that he loves and a sport that he enjoys doing. He even talks to the other little kids and celebrates their accomplishments with them. All without any prompting. What a great thing.

Shelly I'm so excited for you and for Sarah!  Reading your post just made my day!

That is so awesome that she tried it and loved it.  At our gymnastics place we watch through the glass too.  It can be such a riot.  And it's nice too that all of the parents are confined together in one spot by the glass because it gives you the opportunity to make some friends as well.  (Bonus round if Sarah meets a girl she likes AND you like the mom!)

Wonderful!!!  My daughter is a level 5 in gymnastics. Last year she placed in State competition.  It's a great  sport!!!  I have often thought of putting Adam in but then told myself no because he wouldn't enjoy it because it is mostly girls and he is very much about separating the sexes and sports etc.  I am soo glad to hear that you are doing this for her...It will be great!!!

That's awesome! I hope it continues to go SO well. Our dd LOVES
gymnastics day--great for that sensory input & her PT says it has
strengthened her so much (& helped w/ motor planning & balance,
yippee!).

We did parent & me class w/ our little one until a this summer...then she
started in the 3 year old class (all by herself!). She actually does better
without us with her (but also, i think, because the older children don't get
in her face like the 1-2 year olds would in the parent & me class). Her
'coach' is TERRIFIC! I feel bad, she works real hard w/ E, our dd trusts her
(yey!), still has meltdowns & fits, but seems to REALLY enjoy it. I need to
start shopping now for a very nice holiday gift for her 'coach,' she has
really earned it!

Hooray for Sarah (& you!!)!!!

Oh, I am so happy for you guys!!!!!  I think it will be a great thing to do for her.

I started gymnastics when I was in 6th grade and really wished that I hadn't waited so late to start-- I only quit when I was 16 b/c I got a job and couldn't make the 1 hour long drive.  The class was a 3 hr. class too!!!

I really do miss it even now, and I'm 24 yrs. old!!!

I think Sarah will benefit so much from it- I'm excited for you both!!!!!

Let us know how it goes for her.

Shelly that's great.  My son does OT at gymnastics and its been a great thing for him.Good, I'm glad you have a great gym. It is a lot of fun, I'm 41 and I was doing some gymnastics in the playground the other day, it sticks with you. Hurray for Sarah!  It's so nice to find a sport that they enjoy.  I think that sports that are individual yet still form a team (gymnastics, swimming, track & field, etc.) are great.   That rocks WTG Sarah
