Some feel that the soy protein is similar to the casein protein and can cause the same issues.
We use rice milk which is protein enriched and calcium enriched. We also use Calcium/magnesium powder to boost.
We don't bother with cheeses, yoghurts but do use soy based icecream on a rare occasion.
It is amazing what casein is in. I bought gourmet basil the other day to add to dishes. Didn't even check until I got home.... has whey powder in it so that was a waste of .50....

I think we are going to give the CF diet a go. How does everyone provide calcium to their kids w/o diary? I'd love to also get some ideas of what everyone gives their kids for breakfast, since DS used to have milk and cereal. What kind of milk is the replacement? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I am doing this the right way. Ohh, one more question, what ingredients should I be on the lookout for on the CF diet?
Thanks!
vivsha39307.3468287037We use soy milk with cereal. Payne also takes a multi-vitamin.
When on this diet, you cannot have ANYTHING that says 'casein, whey, non fat dry milk, milk, milk fat, butter,' etc.
SILK soy milk is WONDERFUL with cereal - even my husband loves it!
Also there is SO DELICIOUS ice cream with no milk!
Replacing calcium is no issue since the alternatives come with cacium., and there is plenty of natural calcium in fruits and veggies and grains!
Good luck!
autumn39329.3264467593I give my son a calcium/magnesium citrate supplement (chewable - he thinks it's candy). He will drink almond milk and rice milk. He didn't like the Vance's Dari-Free and I didn't either actually. I've had a terrible time trying to find a good cheese replacement. The soy cheeses and yogurts have casein as one of the top ingredients! You just have to read the labels on everything.silk soy yogurt has NO casein, try it!Thanks, Autumn! I will look for it. My biggest problem is that I shop at warp speed (two toddlers in the cart, one in meltdown mode always) so I have a hard time reading every label out there. I know wal-mart carries the silk soy milk...will definitely be on the lookout for the yogurt now!
How about goat milk in place of dairy. I hear almond milk is great also.
No goats milk is not suitable. Ricemilk and soy milk are ok. Almond milk should be fine too. Liz
You CANNOT have whey on a c. free diet, PLEASE remember this, whey is a prouct of MILK - and casien - Whey is the liquid remaining after milk has been curdled and strained; it is a by-product of the manufacture of casein

what is casein http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casein
what is whey http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whey
whey is a very good source of natural proteins and whey isolate is the purest form

regards forker My son could not handle soy, even though he doesn't appear to be allergic to it. He was CF for 8 mo before he went GF. He used Vances Darifree or nut milks. Also, he has just gotten used to not having his "milk" like he always used to want. He is so much healthier now! What I found with some of the soy milks is that they contain maltodextrin fromwheat (which contains gluten) when we originally went just CF. I couldnt figure out why it gave my daughter diarhoea, so we tried many brands ad settled on one (without realizing it at the time) that was gluten free and her diahoea lessened. I cant recommend brands as I live in Australia and it would be different here. Just look out for maltodextrin from wheat(not corn ) in the milk.
