What kind of Dr. did most of you get your ASD diagnosis from?

Also, Our neurologist recommended we take our son to a ped. pyschologist, have any of you been to see one  and what was the outcome like?

Thanks!!

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

My son is 10 and we've lived in 3 different large cities so we've run the gamut.  What it has come down to for us isn't the specialist as much as it is the person.  Do they relate well to your child.  Do they "get it".  Are they up on the latest developments.  I've seen no consistency among the specialties so I look for the right person.

To answer your exact question, the first dx came from a developmental specialist.  Over the years he's gotten dx from ped psychiatrist, ped psychologist.  And depending on how he was doing on that particular day I've gotten low funcitoning austism up the ladder to Aspergers!!  He used to be extremely inconsistent day to day.  He's now pretty consistent.  And I think most specialists would agree he is HFA now that he can be assessed better.

Psychologists:  depends on what they do.  They're all over the place with training--psychodynamic (family dynamics), behavioral, cognitive, etc.  Ask a lot of questions about their approach and what the goals are.  Could be great--could be worthless.  If you decide it's worth a try you'll know whether to stick with it.

Trust your instincts!!  Good luck.

hey kelly, our neruo doc wanted my son to be seen by a neruo-physc,because something just was not right with him. so we went for a 4hr. app and it took about 3wks before i heard from them.then they tell me pdd-nos. wow was not expecting that, but it's all good were adjusting somewhat. take care.mom2carlo

Both of mine saw a psychologist and a neuro for their diagnosis.  As far as the ped psychologist, Gabe did see one.  It only confirmed what I was already saying.  That he was at the developmental age where kids tend to have a very vivid imagination.  And he still does alot of things for effect.

My son was first dxed by a nuero-psych and then later by a dev. ped. The first guy was all doom and gloom, the dev. ped was great. I agree, it all depends on the person, not the letters the preceed or proceed their name.

My son was Dx by a neuroligists through my son's headstart. They have clinics for underinsured families and I asked for Takoda to be seen. He told us Takoda was somewere on the spectrum and tried to explain some of my son's behaviors.

He then referred us to Akron Children's Hospital were he was seen by a group of Drs. and evaluted for about 3 hours. We had a very good experience with Takoda's Dx.
