Why so many docs? | Autism PDD

Just when I think I have this whole autism thing down....I get lost.

After reading about how everyone had their children DX'd and the hours upon hours spent for DX...I wonder...besides his educational DX (which I already have), and his DX from a dev. neurologist (which I am on the waiting list for), do I need additional appointments wiht other specialists?  The only reason I am currenly seeking the medical DX is for wrap around services.  He begins school in September and will receive OT and ST.  Upon his medical DX, the education team advises he will qualify for wrap around services, which inlcudes ABA (I live in PA). Once he begins receiving services, should I be making additional medical appointments?  If so for what?  I feel like there are other things I should be doing....are there?

I think yuou are covered - unless you are concerned about seizures or other regressions

The important thing is to start services as soon as possible -

Thank you both for responding.  I continue to second guess myself.....

We had her pediatrician look at her and she said austistic in less than 10 min.No advice or info to read at all.

ECI had a behavioral specialist in autism come out to see her like 4x and he felt she was an odd duck but couldnt figure out what was it was and totally disagreed with the autism label but he wasnt a doctor or person to do a true diagnoses...

Took her to ped. neurologist who labelled her pdd-nos in less than 15 min..Same as above..no advice or anything to read on the subject..

Developmental ped. took over 3 hours and he stated autism but he told us WHY and all the little things we never even thought of that was going on with her and he gave me a folder of resources & encouraged as much  ABA tx that we could afford and to engage her at all times..best advice ever!  I also got a 3 page write up on her in the mail within 2 weeks...we wanted a full picture of what was going on..her strengths and weakness and what to do:)

Now I just tell people to go with a dev. pediatrician for a full report of what is going on...

The school had their psychologists evaluate her and she stated provisional autism.. but who could trust that from the SD??

Thanks, Shelly.  I think I will begin my search for a dev. ped!

If I have services, an educational DX and a medical DX, would you think it sufficient?  Unless something else presents itself, of course.

Also, what time is Sarah's appt. on Monday?  I Will be sure to be thinking happy thoughts!  Good luck!

Services are what matter..here we dont get any so it was more for me and dh peace of mind..we wanted someone to really look at her for more than 15 minutes and tell us otherwise we would go crazy questioning the other docs.

We go to dev. ped at 2 pm...which is 2 hours ahead than this board..So it will be late evening I am afraid before I can post anything:) I am so scared not knowing what he is going to say about her...he had so many eye openers the first time he saw her that we didnt notice and cant help but worry that monday he will see more than I do.

I am fortunate enough to live in PA.  Our school district team recognized his issues immediately.  The were quick to tell me what he would services he would receive (prior to the IEP)  OT and ST.  They were the ones who also suggested we get a med DX so Liam could get qualified for wrap around.  Thy just dropped of two brushes in our mailbox and sent the OT to our home to show me how to do brush therapy. That is the 4th time they have been to our home in 6 weeks.  They are incredible!

Shelly, thank you for taking the time to answer.  I appreciate it.

I heard PA is good but WOW, I had no idea. Wow, nice a school working with you.  Lucky!!!! I am doing it for the insurance and to make sure we can get on an ABA or another program with my state. They already see my son however, they do the minimum. Also advice is hard to come by. So if I can get some I will take it. Plus a 2nd opinion is best for me.
