Hi Everyone
My son divorced his wife and has a child wit a new woman ( don't even get me started with that) anyway Noah( 9 months Aug 12th) seems delayed to me. He was 4lb 9 oz when born. He is Just starting to crawl, doesn't say DaDA or MaMa. Sometimes he won't turn to his name, other times he will if its said a couple of times.
The other grandsons were all big 9-13, 9-6 and Devin was 9-1 , so I don't know if his small birth weight could be the reason or not. Or because of Devin having Autism am I seeing problems where there aren't any.
I don't want to alarm my DS for no reason and I sure can't talk to my DH, he would freak
I really need some input with this , am I nuts or what? Grandma to Devin 3 yrs ASD / SID Noah was not premature, part of the placenta died which caused low birth weight He does not babble only squeeks
I try not to compare the kids, and I really watch for signs in Isabella ( Devin's 6 month old sister. She army crawls, says DaDa and when you try to get her to say MaMa she shakes her head NO and says Da Da. Bella has excelent eye contact and she already teases Devin. When Devin doesn't pay attention to her shescreams, just long enough to get him screaming then when he stops, she smiles at him and screams again. Quite a little sh**, don't you think? I think and hope Isabell is fine but I'm not to sure about Noah. Thank you for your input, IT really helps Grandma to Devin 3 yrs ASD / SID Well, neither of my kids crawled until they were past 9 months. My ds (who has PDD-NOS) didn't crawly until 9 1/2 months and dd (NT) didn't crawl on hands and knees until 10 1/2 months. She did army crawl, though, from 7 months on. I don't think it's entirely unusual for kids not to be saying mama or dada at 9 months. Is he babbling at all? I would have his hearing checked, to rule out hearing loss (due to not responding to name as well as you think he should). The low birthweight may have something to do with it - did he have health issues at birth or was he premature? I don't think you are nuts - just a concerned grandma. And when there is one child with autism, you look at the next child under a microscope - I've been there and done that! I think it's great you are looking out for your grandchild and I think it's wise to keep an eye on him. Was your grandson premature? I've read that when calculating milestones for preemies you should calculate based on their due date and not the actual date when they were born. Starting to crawl around 9 months is within the normal range. You say he doesn't say dada or mama. Is he babbling at all or making any vocalizations? Typically kids are babbling by 6 months and say their 1st word by 12 months. Child should also consistently respond to name by 12 months. I think it's great that you're on the lookout for the signs and I would keep looking closely since there is ASD in the family, but IMHO based on what you posted I think your grandson is still within the NT range. You might want to print out one of those "your child should be doing this by 1 year" checklists and keep track. If he's not meeting by 12 months, then you might want to share your concerns before the parents and child go in for the 1 year check up. If you think he's delayed, I would not use the "A" word or bring up Devin as an example. I would look at it as getting help for for areas needed like delayed speech and/or coordination. Whether he has low birth or not shouldn't be an excuse to delay help kwim? I'm not certain if he could use some OT/PT help as well his speech sounds are limited and ST may provide some helpful strategies. There is a good site called www.firstsigns.org that has a page talking about concerns parent to parent it's here: http://www.firstsigns.org/concerns/sharing.htm Communication Milestones are here: http://www.firstsigns.org/healthydev/milestones.htm Physical and motor milestones are here: http://www.shands.org/health/Health%20Illustrated%20Encyclop edia/1/002009.htm Here's what you should be concerned about at this age, per the CDC's 7 month milestone list ( http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/actearly/milestones_7months .html) <quote> Developmental Health Watch <unquote> Good luck with everything.
Also, I would do lots of reading about developmental milestones for that age so when you do talk to the parents you are well informed about exactly where he is delayed.
Alert your child's doctor or nurse if your child displays any of the following signs of possible developmental delay for this age range.
