What a fantastic opportunity.  Good luck.you will do great  Hi all!
Thanks for all the well wishes!!  It actually went well.  I think I was talking a little too fast, but other than that, I think I helped to inform the future teachers in the class about autism from a parental perspective.

It was a class room full of special ed majors (masters).  They were all very passionate about teaching autistic children, so they were all ears.  It was myself, a mom of a preteen child, and a mom of a 17 year old child.  It gave the students a better understanding of autism through the childhood to adolescent years.

They asked lots of questions, so I know they were interested.

The superintendent of BOCES actually asked me if I would be willing to speak again at teacher's orientation as well as help to plan after school activities for our kids...That's one of the things that I mentioned that the local schools were lacking in for our kids.

The two other mom's agreed with me, so hopefully this will be the start of something more to come .

Thanks again

Hi all!

Last week, the principal of BOCES called me to sit on a panel for an autism awareness seminar!!  It is mostly made up of educators, doctors, and 2 parent speakers.  At first I was excited, but now I'm nervous.  He stated that there will be 4 questions for me to answer.  Here they are:

1.  What is it like having a child with autism?
2.  What is a day like?
3.  What would I like to see school districts tailor to the needs of autistic children?
4.  What are my aspirations?

That's it....Simple enough, but I'm afraid I'll start stuttering or freezing.. I wish I would have told him "let me think about it".....
YIKES!!

Wish me luck!!

Good luck.  You have a great opportunity here and I'm sure you'll do great.

Nakama,

I was trying like crazy to find that link someone posted last week on "Illustrations of what autism looks like" ...I thought it would be great to print and make handouts of all the pictures and go over the symptoms one by one and how to help make life easier for them and how to recognise behaviors & "WHY" they act this way or that and what to do~especially melt downs or SIB behaviors..

I got a DVD at library yesterday that was so very good at describing every thing about autism as we know it..it was called:

"Family to Family" vol. 1..

A guide to living life when a child is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder..

The whole DVD was done by a mom discussing her 3 sons~ALL had autism and all different from each other and yet had some common traits as well. She gave a good presentation on how wide the spectrum is and how even her oldest with aspergers was still very profoundly affected.

She also commented on the shame of late diagnoses and how many parents are told their child will never talk, love or progress ( I was told this!) and how totally false and WRONG it was to tell parents that..

Best of luck!

ETA: I found this link..it is pretty clever and different way to explain autism..try to find this different rocks and pass around one by one:)

I always hate having to speak publicly until I am actually doing it then I always do well and feel real good about myself afterward.  I have found that if you are prepared and know the subject matter well then it's no problem doing it.  I doubt there are many subjects that you know better than this.  Everyone has a few butterflies at first but once you get going you’ll be fine.  Good Luck!!!

I find the nerves go away once you start talking about something you are passionate about. I'm sure you will make us all proud, what a great opportunity to be heard.
Please let us know how it goes.

Good Luck
I agree with Rhosyn, You will do Great!!!!
