Does John Travoltas son have autism? | Autism PDD

Share

They DO seem like nice people, don't they, Shelley?  Its hard for me to villify them when they just come across so good and caring.

I might speculate autism, but I also speculate their son gets a lot of help, even if he doesn't have the diagnosis.

Let's say, for the sake of arguement, he is autistic.  If that is true, they are listening to their son's needs instead of bowing to the desire to appear more 'typical'.  They let him wear what he is comfortable with, and they don't force him into the limelight (or even a trip to the grocery store) because he isn't comfortable with that.

I know that we take dd out a LOT more than ds because she craves being around people (so much so that we have been known to take her to the store just to get her out of the house for a bit, not because we really needed anything right then).  She loves having her picture taken and getting dressed up (although no bows or hats for her.  lol) and ds doesn't.  Consequently, I suspect there will be many more photos of her out and about than my ds as the years go by.  I have to make an effort to make sure I take pictures of him too, and most of his are taken from a distance instead of mugging for the camera.

One thing that did strike me in the photos of his son was that there were a lot of pictures that reminded me strongly of pictures of my own son with his dad.  The hooded sweatshirt, which seemed to be present for many years, also caught my attention because it wasn't just a phase, it seems to be fairly persistent and is a pretty typical type of defense mechanism for sensory issues.

I like John Travolta.  I don't really agree with Scientology, but he isn't Tom Cruise freaky weird either.  I get the feeling he is just deeply private in general.

I AM SURE THAT SYLVESTER STALON HAS A CHILD THAT HAS AUTISM.  I AM NOT SURE ABOUT JOHN TRAVOLTA, BUT YOU MIGHT BE CORRECT.  I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU THAT IF JOHN TRAVOLTA DID HAVE A CHILD WITH AUTISM, HE MIGHT NOT WANT HIS CHILD TO HAVE THE " TREAMENTS" THAT HE NEEDS TO HAVE.

KAT'S mom.

i dont personally know. if my son was born while filming ladder 49 with my friend training him i would have asked........but

i saw mtv cribs or maybe it was the mtv show of the the rich in famous and they had jets room. iit was very, hmmm, mundane, or bare with an emphasis on flying objects...including his specially made bed. a round flying ship with walls and top and lots of windows and a big door opening. now, yeah, theyve got all the money, but, it wasnt a room youd see alot of rich ones tauting-it was almost perculiar.

also if i can recall, i knew a few, scientologists dont believe in medicine nor do they believe in medicalintervention by reall phd type doctors. hmmm? wonder if he at least does biomed-they beleive in that!

heres another one, they DO NOT believe in vaccines. now, wouldnt we all love to know if hes had mmr or thermisol. ok, im tired and thinking too much :)

just a thought

mbrogue39305.8726388889Really... the pictures are unmistakable. I wish both Travolta and Stallone would use their celebrity status to help the cause! They have a lot of Political power and influence they could and perhaps have the (unfortunate) responsibility to use!I have read that "Autism Speaks" asked him to attend a charity event .. a golf thing, and he refused!!! I am all for privacy and keeping ur kids info private, but no one is asking for his ssn#!!!! Just support.... speak.... attend a function!!! Look at Dan Marino and all he does and continues to do for Autism!!!
I wish both Travolta and Stallone would use their
celebrity status to help the cause!
Just taking time to give Sly his props for always being open about his son's
autism--and showing up and lending his name and donating money to
MANY autism related charity events! He's helping out the cause. We had a politician here in Australia Tim Fisher, who was deputy primeminister years ago. He never spoke of his sons autism publically either to protect his son. He still doesn't give out a lot of personal information about him and the boy is a teenager. He stated in a TV interview last year his son didn't want to be talked about. It didn't mean the child didn't get therapy(he actually went to the same school my kid go to now that is autism specific. Then they got therapy for him in the US I believe. When I look at those photos I just see a very loving family. The last shots appear to e on holidays in May 2007. He doesn't seem to be hiden away.  Im not diagnosing nyone from a photo. Liz

I understand ppl having a right to their privacy, and autism is a very touchy subject for some...some want to share their stories with everyone and others want to keep it quiet...I don't think either way is wrong.

But I do want to comment that with the fame that John Travolta carries, this could be a great way to bring out autism awareness.  I look at it like we need these celebrities to help us, bcuz more ppl will listen to them, than they do to us ordinary ppl.  It would great if he could do more awareness, even support some walks or support a local autism group.  He doesn't have to share too much info, but just getting his name involved could open up so much.

And call me harsh, but celebrities live the kind of life style where it is sort of their duty to do these things.  Makes me wonder if the rumors of scientology not letting him get therapy is true...otherwise why wouldn't he do more for autism awareness?

Being a millionaire as John Travolta he very well could be given his son therapies..I can imagine with his means his boy just may be getting 24 hour care & therapies...and perhaps because he is so wealthy and knows this child will be taken care of for the rest of his life~money no object..he just wants to keep it private..because he can.  Just wondering:)

I was kinda thinking that too..J.Travolta justs doesnt seem to be so blinded by scientology to prevent his son from getting some help? He is a very smart man and I am sure his little boy is getting more help than we will ever know..If I had his money and fame I wouldnt want cameras all over my kids 24/7 especially if I had a child with autism that totally depises cameras, people and chaos.....He seems to have a big heart in interviews as well as his wife and it is hard to phantom not doing anything for their son.  It's their business if they want to protect him and keep him out of public scrutiny. His child will have a wonderful life I am sure:)

It would indeed be great if they used their fame to bring greater good to autism research and treatment, but just think of how their children might be hounded later on by the press.  I mean, just listen to US!

Of course, we have a vested interest in autism, but the National Enquirer is sold on the tastes of jackals.  Fame & fortune, movie stars, funky religion, gorgeous family, hooded chubby toe walking grimacing son constantly accompanied by a Mannie, and a coicidentally autism-fighting paternal uncle who also makes films.  I can see a morbid curiosity in the general population, and John and Kelly sought careers that brought limelight.  Their kids did not.

This is right up there with Paris Hilton going to jail, Nicole Richie anorexic and drunk/stoned yet possible preggo, detox redux number 3 for Brittany and Lindsay...know what I mean?  Weird scientology aside, I'd like to think these are just parents protecting their son and daughter.  Even if people are scientologists or snake-handling-speaking-in-tongues fundamentalists, they usually do love and shield their kids.

Who knows - maybe they are actually laundering millions through the uncle and sending it to autism research, but under the radar screen of their church!  Just wish the kid well.

Ive read alot of Dan Marino and Sylvester Stallone supporting Autism awareness and stuff also that they said John Travoltas son has autism. Also Joey Travolta made a film about autism and John Travolta and his family wernt there for the first showing. Its disappointing if its true but I still like his movies. Im not big on boycotting people since you never know the real truth but it is upsetting and makes you really wonder. I cant believe I never heard of this before apparently its old news!

Here are sites I found about him....
Wow, Jett must be 15-16 now, but last picture of him was at six.  Theirs several current pictures of their lovely daughter.  Sad.
There are actually a few more recent ones in that link that I posted that came out (coincidently

He has some facial featuers that suggest perhaps a genetic syndrome, too (like fragile x).

I'm turning into a gossip, wow.

fred39303.6952199074

I noticed something too:( Hardly recognizable now from his early pics..I saw something in the little girl too that reminded me of Sarah..kinda stand offish but she may just be shy...dont know what to think? Hard to believe someone with the resources they have to not be upfront with helping him and bringing awareness to autism instead of hiding him?

All I know is my dh had Kawasaki's as a child and the symptoms he
experienced are no where close to anything like autism. Also, he completely
recovered and is as NT as they come. John Travolta's brother Joey actually has a special Education background so I think he would do that work regardless of his nephews diagnosis. As to Jett well its just all speculation, and the boy is entitled to his privacey, regardless of his celebrity parents.  I do hope if he is autistic he has received an appropriate education or it is a case of neglect. Liz

I have read several gossip columns about this, and the majority conquer that yes the boy is autistic!! Do u see the "toe-walking" pic??? Sad really!!! I used to like Travolta, but not any more!!! Anyone with his celebrity status and his financial means not doing all he can for his DS or for autism awareness makes me sick!!!!

Well, who knows what they are doing behind the scenes.  I'd give them the benefit of the doubt.  I'd guess he's pretty sensory with the hooded sweatshirts and stuff, so maybe the don't bring him due to reasons of overstimulation and such.

I don't usually discuss religion...but I'm just going to say one thing here.  They are scientologists.  I'll admit that I looked into scientology at one time in my life.  I left the meeting thinking that the people were as Barney Fife would say, "They're nuts...they're A1 Nuts!"

ETA: Sorry for the Andy Griffith reference above...my dad is watching that show in his room and it's kinda loud...I just heard Barney utter that phrase and I thought it fit here.

Rhosyn39303.6950462963Ok I found them on a website with all the stars kids. When hes younger I dont see it as much but the older pix of him and there are a few recent ones. He does have a look on his face, or lots of pix he isnt looking at the camera and theres one of him toe walking. Also saw a recent one of him sitting really weirdly in a indian cross way not sure if thats autism related just looked really strange and painful. So sad if he really is

Wow, Jett must be 15-16 now, but last picture of him was at six.  Theirs several current pictures of their lovely daughter.  Sad.

Edited to add - actually, there are some pictures of him as a teenager but I didn't recognize them as I scrolled through him because he looks much different han he did as a child.

fred39303.6818402778YES, he has autism. That's why I brought it up in my scientology
escapades.

They are not allowed to treat any "psychiatric" conditions. Basically they
think disabled folks are "degraded" beings. Some can be saved through
the
teachings of scientology, others are clearly not material for scientology as
LRH says, "we are not a religion for the insane" lovely, huh?

Google pics of Jett Travolta, you will see MANY unmistakeable signs of
autism.

Edited to add that Kawasaki syndrome has NO long term effects other
than possible heart problems. It is not linked at all to neurological or
developmental issues at all. "treatment" of most medical conditions by
scientologists consists of hot saunas and vitamin supplements prescribed
by LRH. You are allowed to see a Dr., if your conditon is "physical in
nature", the caveat being that they believe about 90% of most "illnesses"
are pschycosomatic in nature, and can be "cured" by following scientology
protocol......
MamaKat39303.5907060185I know that I can spot an ASD child in mere seconds!...other than them all being so beautiful?

In some pictures my son has a distant look to him.  Especially in his eyes...like he's in his own world maybe?  And in some pics he appears to be staring off into space.  But I have seen that look in some pics of my NT children also.  Maybe I notice it more because he is my son and I KNOW he has a diagnosis?

Oh I just thought of what I was thinking about...It's like a lack of facial expression or maybe even over exaggarated facial expression at times.  Not quite centered...anyone know what I'm talking about?

Anyway...just rambling there

I was just curious since Ive never heard of this before. Leanne you might be right about the rug cleaners to seek treatment and I read that the brothers disappointed they wont seek treatment or acknowlegdge it for their son but it probably isnt true.

Whos Dr. Michael Palmer?

143hayden39303.5673726852

Seems like they or anyone can blame his condition on Kawasaki's, or mercury in the swordfish the mom craved when pregnant, or shots, or a cord around his neck when he was born - whatever.

As long as he's getting the therapy he needs, I respect the family's privacy.  They probably don't want the paparazzi taking invasive photos of their kid who cannot defend himself.

I would think "blaming" the rug shampoo would give them an out to seek therapy relative to their religion.  Maybe they see his Kawasaki hangover as being similar enough to autism that they use Travolta's brother to guide them in intervention.

Dr. palmer is a man who has a asd kid who wnted to learn how come only 1 of his kids has asd. I believe shots as he says/toxins can mess up someone as well as cord around the neck which can lead to a tbi I read on line. Lack of oxyagen would be the why. Dr. palmer rights books that are great just for information. The problem that the cdc/fda don't get is we all don't have great gi functions and that we all our very different. I hate the fact we all are expected to be a like. There are kids who have severe asd/mr that make no progress even with help. All we can do is help our kids at home also and get them what help we can early.

Most hollywood people are in the scientiology mess I think. Sad for their kids sake!

O ok Ill try looking up some of his books, sounds interesting.

I looked up Kawasakis syndrome dosnt sounds anything similar to autism to me! Also I can only find one picture of Jett with his parents when he was a little kid the rest are of just them or them and their daughter.

I'm not being a smart A** here really....I'm really curious to what the unmistakable signs of autism are?  I wasn't aware that there were any physical features that were subject to all children with Autism.

Karrie

Well, when I was reading up on scientology for my class, I ran across several
of him toe walking, odd postures, grimaces, etc.
I know two teenage boys with autism, and his expressions and body posture
looked eerily like them.

You're right, Karajab--I didn't mean to imply there was an unmistakeable
"look" to autism. I guess I was talking more as parents who can notice a
child with autism because we "recognize it".
That's all. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

Oh i don't want you thinking that you offended anyone.  Certainly not me anyway...I was serious when I said I didn't know.  I was actually curious if there WERE physical signs that I hadn't read about  to see if my son had them.LOL

Karrie

His brother Joey is very involved in the autism community and runs a motion picture camp for kids on the spectrum http://www.joeytee.com/thedailynews.htm  Draw your own conclusions, but I have met Joey, and see how involved he is.  I think he is doing for the autism community what his brother can't because of Scientologies stranglehold on him. It's been speculated that he's autistic and that he's not receiving therapy due to their parent's religious beliefs, but it's just baseless conjecture from what I can tell.  I would assume that they do not speak about it for privacy reasons and not jump to conclusions.  Their contention is that he had Kawasaki syndrome from rug cleaners.Dr. Michael Palmer's youngest son has asd also. I have herd john say he has a asd son on tv. This guy I mention has great books for adults.

When I was 15, I didn't like my parents to talk about me.  Perhaps they don't discuss this because they are respecting the privacy of their son.  Just a thought.

I know people speculate about this because of John's Scientology beliefs.  Who knows?????

I figured this was more like gossip so i posted here.

I read online that John Travoltas oldest son, Jett has autism but they dont want to seek treatment because they are scientologist and they believe "mental/neurological" illnesses can be changed by the person and is a sign of weakness. Also they said that the travoltas said their son has kawasakis disease. They said a few close friends of the travoltas said that thier son whos 15 now that they think he does have autism too. And of course everyones saying that you never see them with their son only their daughter. Do you guys think this is true or a bunch of rumors??? Sad if it is but hard to say if it is true or not. I dont know if this is something people talked about ages ago and im behind or just something new since everyones talking about autism everywhere. I really hope its not because I love John Travolta!

143hayden39303.5128587963

Rumor has it....but yet unless I really knew them personally...I couldn't say for sure.
