Here's a similar topic from March.

Good luck with everything.

Thanks!!

Omamma...I don't think it has anything to do with a sore throat, or anything like that.

It does seem like a stim---like he is getting some sort of pleasure out of it, but I just can't understand why!?!?

Maybe I will try to give him some gum---maybe something else to do with his mouth rather than gag himself...although gum, in the past, has turned into me finding it all over my house!!  But he was younger, so maybe he will be better with it now.

My ds did that for about a year when he was six. He almost threw up a
few times. For him it was a mixture of sensory thing and the attention
getting. His teacher hated it and we mostly tried to ignore it. When he
would do it during meals it was a little hard to ignore someone trying to
make himself throw up so I'd just say that if that's what he wants to do
he needs to do it in his room. He eventually stopped.

Okay for the last several days Mason has been purposely gagging himself.  He is taking anything he can find and sticking it in his mouth and causing himself to gag!  And when he can't find a toy etc, he is using his fingers.

Is this a sensory thing?  I don't think it's an attention thing, but I did "strongly" tell him he can't do that...he just kept going...so after a few days I thought maybe I should ignore it, but that doesn't work either...he just keeps doing it...over and over and over!

Anyone else deal with this????

I'm at a loss here, as to why he's doing this and how to stop it!

It is a STIM.

dd did this at about 18 mos, repeatedly -- thanks for reminding me of it!  It is very common, in NT and ASD kids, ( think typically toddlers BUT) despite how bizarre it seems!

Oh -- we simply ignored it and eventually it stopped.

foxl39303.3755787037Could he have a sore throat???  DD does this on occasion when she is sick.It is a Stimm! My son does that! My son's therapist says it's pretty common. We just ignore it, but it doesn't seem to be helping. It does go through spurts though and he's been doing it since he was an infant.

You could try redirection to something just as sensory like maybe playdough or a box of beans or something.

Hayden used to do this when he was a year old! I didnt know about stims then. It was really funny, I thought even got it on video, till he starting vomiting because of it. He dosnt do it like he did as a baby but he does get short periods of doing it but they usually dont go past a day.

Hope you can find some way to re-direct him! Sorry Ive got no advice to give you
