Yes - my ds usually acts good in public. Not at home though! And it is even more frustrating when you have called this meeting to talk about behaviors he has - and he acts perfectly fine! But it's also an indication that maybe this is a school he WILL do fine at.
Beware though - sometimes kids act really good for the first month and then they settle in. And BAM! Behaviors start to come out in force. This happens with NT children as well - just not to that degree!
We have those days with Mason too! For us it seems to go by the hour or even half hour, lol.
I think it's good to get the IEP in place before he starts school, just go over all of your concerns and problems, and if they don't show up...great!! But if they do, everyone is a little more prepared.
I posted a couple days ago about my dilema and my sons preschool because he isnt fully potty trained yet (he still wont poop). I met with his teacher and principle of the preschool a few hours ago and went over everything. I told them about his neurologist dx him and that were going to a dev. ped. next week to find out more. And told them about his seizures and everything and they are very accomadating and I was extremely happy.
Anyway my son was fine the entire time. He was actually carrying on conversations with them and playing nicely and actually playing and running around with his teachers son who was there. He also never once brought up anything about dinosaurs! He never stomped around like one or got caught up in his imaginary land! The only thing I noticed was unappropriate and obnoxious laughing he did in the beginning trying to play with the boy. He also didnt get overly hyper. The teacher said she thinks hell do fine. They also said he dosnt seem very autistic to them either. Is this normal? I know sometimes some days are alot better than others but theres usually always something and usually his famous dinosaur that takes over his body and mind and gives him trouble interacting with anyone pretty much.
I know his doc said hes mild but maybe I just feel stupid for having them meet with me and he acts totally NT. Do any of your kids do this? And maybe he wont have any problems at all with school? Anyones thoughts would be great.
LOL...yep, totally normal, for mine anyway...something about being around strangers, he's always on his best behavior, very reserved...when we are in settings where he is the focus, or maybe he feels unfamiliar, he never does any of the wacky stuff he does at home or at the grocery store...like shouting lines from movies out of nowhere, or needing to carry 10 trains in his hands at any given time, calling each of them by name, over and over, or saying the same thing 150 times in a span of 30 minutes...nope, none of that when you want him to exhibit the behaviors you've been trying to explain to someone
It's good that you had the meeting, that they were okay with it...I'm sure once he settles into the routine and feels a little more comfortable with his surroundings, the dinosaur will come out again...LOL...hopefully they will know what to do...
Same here. The school doesn't for the most part see anything with Adam. He doesn't qualify for an IEP anymore and most teachers he has say that they wouldn't have guessed that he was on the spectrum. Karrie I am very greatful they did meet with me. His teacher kept commenting how smart he was because he went straight to work putting a puzzel together for her. They said I can come to chapel which they have once a week, for the first month or so because all three classes come together, incase he gets overstimulated. I really liked that idea. Also they said theyll tell the teachers aid, who deals with the childrens pottying/messes about him and shell try to work with him about going too and to leave a few pullups, change of clothes and his shades with him at the class. I told them about all his sensitivities (noises, crowds, lights, textures etc.) I told them about him removing his clothes and they are going to work with him on everything. They said theyll tape something up about his seizure so if they have a substitute it def. wont be missed. Theyl also tell everyone who works there about him too. They said I probably wont get a call in the first two weeks since all the kids are going to be adjusting unless its something major or he has a seizure etc. They said they stick to a strict routine so he should be ok with that, which is great. They said last year they had a kid who literally thought he was luke skywalker and they worked with him to eventually they got him to be luke skywalker only on the playground and said theyl work with Hayden as well when "he" comes out! Im so happy everything I brought up to them they wrote down and thought of ways to deal and help him! I think hell do great there too although there are 16 children in his class so I hope hell stay the way he was at the meeting, that would be awsome!
The reason I was so surprised is because I dont really see him on this good of a behavior (as in his quirks) so I was alittle shocked. Isnt that weird how that happens?? Thanks guys!
