It was my child's pediatrician that originally gave the original medical diagnosis of autism, and we were then referred to a pediatric neurologist and developmental pediatrician who confirmed the diagnosis.
However, in making my initial appointment with the pediatrician to discuss it, I had prepared several developmental delay charts (hearing, language, social/cognitive, and physical) as well as a detailed questionnaire outlining his repetitive behaviors, etc. I faxed all of that in to give to the physician ahead of time, and when we arrived, I was given the M-CHAT to complete. When the doctor arrived, she had my charts, etc. with her, and I could see they had been highlighted throughout, so it was apparent she'd reviewed them all thoroughly. There wasn't any doubt.
In our case, we went to our pediatrician for a referreal to a pediatric psychologist to get a diagnosis. It's what our insurance required at the time.We went to a pediatric nuerologist who dx'ed my son. Altho we are going to see a developmental ped. who specializes in autism on the 15th so I can be sure about it.
I don't think they can. Certainly not in AUS anyway.from what I understand dr's cannot DX autism. In fact, when I was little my dr knew about my DX, and once I moved to NY, and once I got in collage I switched DR.s for geographic conviencnce. As far as I could tell he had no record of my DX cause when we got to talking and he asked me a bit about my past one day while seeking medication for stress/anxiety (which by the way I took only for a little bit, decided it was a crutch, and i dont need yet another crutch in life so i stopped) but anyways... I told him that I was DX'ed when I was 4 or 5 with HFA and that I beleived now days I would instead have a DX of AS. He was shocked, and stated that it was a miss diagnosys and that it was impossible for someone with HFA or AS to work where I do (i drive forklifts in a very buissy wearhouse)
and in the same town. He also works with the childern hosp. in Denver. The staff was real nice on the phone. They told me the apt would be 1 hr. just for 1 child
. I'll know in Sept,, they told they wantd to see my daughter first bec of school and her IEP.In our case it was our pediatric neuro who said autism to us first, but she referred us to a neuropsychologist...in the end it was a pediatric psychologist that diagnosed him...I'm honestly not sure what the difference is between the two and not sure why our neurologist didn't just diagnose him...it seems a lot of neuro's do dx autism.
I would bring the string...if it is a calming thing for her then the dr will see exactly how she needs it and uses it.
