IQ Testing | Autism PDD

Share

I am currently looking for somebody to do IQ testing for my youngest autistic son.  He is high functioning (and I believe to be extremely smart) to the point most people do not realize he is autistic.

I have tried searching the internet, local organizations, etc., but have come up with nothing.  The school district has tested him before, but they don't understand the issues or how to modify the testing so the results will be more accurate.  The school district currently uses the WASI.

I know this is a parent forum, but maybe someone else has been in this situation.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you are looking for a private evaulation, you should consult a neuropsychologist.  You are going to want to find someone that has alot of experience dealing with kids on the spectrum.

Google neuropsychologist and your state and see what comes up in your area.  If you are doing any private therapy, such as speech or OT, ask your therapists for recommendations, or ask your peditrician.

What state / metropolitan area are you in?  Folks here might have some recommendations if you narrow down the geography.  I have a great recommendation for IL / Chicagoland area.

Thanks for the info.  I'll give it a shot after work.

We are in St. Louis, MO.

I just went through this.  I posted the results in a thread a few weeks ago.  This will give you an idea of the kind of report you'll get from a neuropsych.  She met with C for 2, 3 hour sessions plus I provided some video of him in his home environment.

hello! I 2 was lucky enough as a kid to have the HFA label and be considered smart, always top of my class, everyone wanted my help for homework and science projects, hahahah.

Back in my day, their was no aspie or PDD-NOS, anybody who would have had such labels in the present or future would all be lumped into the HFA catagloy, the result, more and more I feel im miss-daignosed.

It is my understanding, that while HFA and AS are interchangable, more and more they are establishing different criteria for the 2.

I read that 1 difference between HFA and AS is IQ. HFA tend to do average or less then slightly then AS, who tend to have an above average IQ. I have never taken an IQ test, but was told a long time ago, while seeing a phyc while in school because I was having behavior problems (HFA kids and behavior problems, nooo wayyyy!!!!)
and he stated that he felt I was bored in class, knew the material, so I would get into trouble. He felt it was likly I had an above average IQ and if thats true, then HFA is a miss diagnoses, and AS is more likly.

Just a thought...

You can also try www.autismsource.org, which is the ASA's searchable database of autism professionals/services.  It's very extensive/comprehensive.
