I think Brendon is "potty" trained | Autism PDD

That is sooooo fabulous!!

We purposely talked about our goals in ABA in front of Sarah and sure enough the next day she would do it before we got to around to teaching her:P

They are super smarty pants! Wow, that is WONDRFUL.  I can't wait for my son to overcome his fear of the potty but that'll be a while for my guy. amberwaves39302.5779861111Great news!!! In order to finish our ds' potty training, we made him clean-
up the accidents. Don't know if this will work, but he hated that so much
that he was potty trained in less than 2 days.

I agree that your ds is potty trained. Congrats on what I think is one of the
hardest parenting jobs...even for NT kids!

Rhosyn,

I know there are some products out there that you put in the toilet and when the child pees it make sparkly stars or some such thing.  There are also some little disposable rings or glitter for "aim and shoot" type entertainment.  You might consider something like this to show him that it's much more fun and entertaining to go in the potty rather than on the carpet.

I didn't use these types of things myself but I have friends that have raved about it.  Just a thought.

Rhosyn - that is one HUGE milestone - COngrats

When we were potty training my son, we had lots of poop accidents.  It seemed like he first understood that the urge means pulling down your pants, and later understood that it means running to the toilet.  He had to learn to recognize the urge soon enough.

It seemed like each time he got a little closer to the bathroom.  When the accident happened in the hallway outside the bathroom, we knew we were soon home free.

I don't know anything about those puppy pads, but you could try having an extra potty chair nearby so he doesn't have to run all the way to the bathroom.

You might want to try a social story or visual cues too, so I'm including my usual list of potty resources (ignore the yellow highlighting).

Well I have some great news.  It looks like B is finally "potty" trained. I think he heard us discussing the problems he's going to have at school if he's still using pull ups.  How his little mind works though...amazing.  He took that to mean that he couldn't pee in the pull ups anymore.  He's started taking them off all by himself. Then he proceeds to pee on the floor.  I can't get him to the toilet fast enough. He just goes wherever the pull up comes off.  I thought it was just a sensory issue about wearing the pull ups at first.  Then I had to clean up a pile of poop out of the closet.  We haven't had a wet pull up (except for at night) in 3 days.  I'm wondering if using those little puppy training pads that you can put on the floor might protect the carpet better.  I know he'll eventually start using the toilet if I keep working with him, but in the meantime do ya'll think I should try those pads?  I can't afford new carpet.  Of if you know of any good cleaning supplies that get the smell of pee out of carpet...let me know lol.

AMAZING!  I love it when they overhear things and act on them.

I often deliberately sing T's praises TO OTHERS knowing she will take it in.  "Gossip" is preceived as being more valid than being told directly!  Works every time!

Go to a pet store and get one of the dog/cat enzyme urine rmovers.  They are the BEST!

How awesome!!

Karrie

That is wonderful...keep up the good work. Well, you're 1/2 way there

No advice on the carpet issue.  Hmmm...  That could become a bigger problem then the pullups if it continues - does he have some aversions to the toilet, I guess?  Now that he's obviously in control of where he goes, it might be time to take out the BIG BRIBES if he goes in the right place!

Anyways, congrats on the progress!  The feeling of throwing out that last package of pull-ups is a good one :)

When you do get there (which you will soon, I'm sure!) - don't throw out the last package of pull-ups! Freecycle them! Or offer them on your local craigslist as free. Or, if you have a lot - I have sold a package of opened pull-ups for a few dollars on craigslist as well. Just trying to be environmentally-friendly

Congrats on him getting the first part of training down! I, too, would put a potty chair in whatever room he plays in most. Put some plastic underneath it for easier clean-up. He might be big for it - but at least he will not have to run a long way to get there!

Wow, these are great post.  Our son Ryan just turned five and is just now getting used to using the potty.  We had some trouble with him "touching the mess" after making a #2 and thankfully that is becoming less and less of a problem.  It is very upsetting but nothing we could do except closing monitor his behavior and when he has to go.  Any tips on the potty training are appreciated.  He is in pull ups now and clearly doesn't like the feel of a mess but doesn't quite know what to do.

Mathis,

Do a search for "potty training" on the board - there are LOTS and LOTS of posts about it.

One tip I will give you that I have given lots of times: Have some books that are favorites of his be designated as "potty books". They are only to be read when sitting on the potty - no other time. My ds would sit on the potty for LONG periods of time just to get his favorite books read to him. We had a stack of about 10-15. When he got bored with those, we would switch them out and put in the ones that were his current favorites. Eventually, he accidentally went poop in the potty and we had a party! It is difficult to do this - but often try about 10-15 minutes after a meal, or when he generally has a bowel movement (if he's somewhat regular). I had an 8 month old crawling baby at the time - so I know it's not easy, especially if you have other children!

Good luck!
