Ok so my daughter underwent the sedated ABR - her hearing is fine barring some positive pressure in th emiddle ear which, if atall, interfers with the quality of low frequency sound transmission - so all is all, hearing loss/difficulty has been ruled out.. we r dealing with classical autism! yeah -somewhere that insane part of me hoped that it was a "physical" problem with the ear that could be fixed and not autism..
Something abt the audiologist struck me.... she never made ANY eye contact.. She is the one of the ped. audiologists at JFK Hospital (in NJ) and she talked to us explaining the procedure, results et al but never once looked us in the eye.. and yet she was SO good, so thorough AND so affable. When she talked to us, she looked up ABOVE our heads - there was no mistaking that she was avoiding eye contact...
Amazing... encouraging.............
Same with R - though in R's case I was had become so sure by then that he had Classic ASD that if the ABR had said hearing loss - I would have thought- oh he has ASD + hearing loss
and oh yes there is plenty of Spectrum people out there
Rita, you sound a little better today. Come wander around a software development shop like the one I work in and you'll find plenty of folks like the one you descibe. They're out there, trust me.
I am so glad she made it through this test:)
We had the hearing test 2x and she was noncompliant both times...this test was recommended..we didnt because the audiologists and others felt she had perfect hearing and would only do it to get a absolute answer. They did put in ear tubes for fluid in her one ear..I was so hopeful that this would be the answer for her but it wasnt...she did perk up more but language still needed tons of therapy to come in.
Now you know she hears well so that is good
