Hi everyone I am not having a very good morning so far !!! Today at 5:30 after a long day at school Nick has a Dr.'s appointment because I got a letter from the nurse at his school because he needs one more MMR to complete his immunizations.........I have been putting it off for as long as I possibly could! I hate shots period even for my NT kids I have never liked the idea of them even before I had a child with autism and all of the controversy over mercury poisoning. Now it is just worse!!! Also to top it off getting him into the doctors office is a complete nightmare!!! Nicks Daddy has to work late so he cannot be there with me so I am gonna have to hold him down not easy to do considering he has the strenght of three men when it comes to the doctors office! One reason why we don't go unless we absolutely have to. I asked the receptionist when I made the appointment if they had the shots without mercury...she ofcourse didn't know what I was talking about. She said a nurse would call me today to answer my questions. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to ease him at the doctors office( minus sedating him prior)?? I am so worried he is gonna have a bad few days after the shot, this is what usually happens after shots with him, mean and mad no sleeping etc. He only has two days of summer school left and tomorrow they are going to the movies to see Madigascar (he has been begging to see that movie) I am seriously thinking about cancelling the appointment for a later day.
Sorry to ramble but I actually lost sleep over this last night!! Isn't it great that our government or whoever is responsible has made us have to second guess all of our decisions when it comes to our kids??
Nita
If it won't cost you anything, I would cancel the appointment and reschedule for another day. That way you have more time to get answers to your questions from the nurse, Nick has a better chance of being able to go to the movie and get through it, AND perhaps you can reschedule to a date/time when Nick's daddy can be there to help.
Sorry I can't help when it comes to making a trip to the doctor more bearable! Let us know how it goes!

call me crazy, you might not like this idea, but i let my kids wear a costume for their dr appts, especially if it is a scary one. the day after halloween, i go and buy a bunch of costumes at 90% off. you can even get them now at the second hand stores... but i let them dress like superman, spider man and the hulk to go to the appt. and tell them to try to pretend to be really strong like the hulk or superman.
it really works for my boys. hope this helps.

Nita,
I don't know if this is acurate or not.. Remember the link that michelle gave us to the mercury calculator? Well on there it shows the MMR/MMR II Merck and it is showing that it doesnt have any thermasol in it. I don't even see another MMR immunization on this list other than this one either. So does that mean that merk laboratories has the stake on all the mmr immunizations? If so then that would mean that you don't even have to look for a replacement becasue it wouldn't contain it. If i am wrong here ..PLEASE someone say something. Here is the link:

The MMR vaccine has never had any mercury in it, from what I remember the issue with it is your child is getting 3 different dead viruses in 1 shot, the believe is that getting so many viruses at once is what causes the problems, autism and leaky gut are most often discussed. In some countries it is possible to request the MMR as individual shots spaced out at least 4 weeks apart. I think it's partly what clouds the vaccine debate, not everyone realises there are 2 completely separate issues involved, including many pediatricians.
Most states have some types of exemptions from having to vaccinate your child, based on health or religious beliefs, sometimes both It varies greatly from state to state but the info should be readily available online.
Hope I was of some help.

I read yesterday that MMR has eggs in it (which I found out Luke is allergic to) and the Hep B vaccine has yeast in it (which Luke is also allergic to). I'm sure the quantities of each (eggs and yeast) are very small, but I still would have thought twice about letting them give those chots to Luke had I known!
Kellie If I remember corectly it says IF YOUR CHILD IS ALLERGIC TO EGGS NOT TO GET THE MMR... Also if they have EVER had more than a mild reaction to it!
With the MMR the Rubella has somehow been linked to autism.
I was also told to try to get the MMR in 3 seperate shots a measels shot, a mumps shot and a rubella shot and to have the immunizations done 1 YEAR apart. (If I can find the link again I will post - that was a hard one to find) Most dr's will tell you they dont make them seperate but they do... the link said what company had them.... I need to find that link!!!
Nita if he is afraid of going to the dr office what about taking him to the health clinic? Most counties have a health department that offers free or reduced price vaccinations... check into it.... ours are usually done in a preschool room of a local church.
ALSO just an FYI school immunizations are not mandatory http://www.vaccinetruth.org/flyers.htm

Who shouldn't get the MMR vaccine?
Your child should not get the MMR vaccine if she has ever had a life-threatening allergic reaction to gelatin (yes, the stuff that makes Jell-O hold together), the antibiotic neomycin, or a previous dose of MMR vaccine. She'll probably also be advised against getting the vaccine if she:
has HIV or AIDS or any other disease that affects the immune system
has ever had a low platelet count
Because the measles vaccine is made by growing the virus in chick embryo cells, children with egg allergies were at one time advised not to get the MMR vaccine. However, recent studies have found that even children with severe egg allergies can receive this vaccine without any increased risk of side effects.
What precautions should I take?
If your child is moderately or severely ill, you should probably reschedule the shot for after she recovers. Also, if she's taken high doses of oral steroids (such as for asthma or poison ivy) for more than two weeks, she should wait three months before receiving the MMR or any live, weakened vaccine, because steroids can impair her ability to build immunity after vaccination.
If she's been undergoing treatment for cancer, including radiation or chemotherapy, you'll want to wait at least five months before bringing her in for this shot to give her immune system time to recover. Finally, let your pediatrician know if your child has recently received a blood transfusion or any other blood product before she gets this vaccine

CAN M-M-R BE GIVEN SEPARATELY?
"I would like my 2-year-old to have the MMR shot, but separately. One Measles, One Mumps and One Rubella. My family physician told me they dont make it that way so I believed him until I read your article. If you give the M-M-R components separately, start with the measles first after age one, then mumps at least one year later, then eventually rubella. What do you recommend I tell my physician or should I just switch doctors?"
After September 11, several vaccine companies shifted their production to meet needs of national defense. Separate measles and mump vaccine production stopped. However, over a year ago, these vaccines have become available again. The vaccine company that provides these separately is Merck. You should be able to ask your pediatrician to order these for you.

And some highlights from http://neuro-www.mgh.harvard.edu/forum_2/TouretteSyndromeF/5 .25.997.38PMSomeofthisin.html
MMR vaccine must not be given when a child is sick or taking
antibiotics.
Otitis media ear problems requires check of food allergies and levels of immunoglobin antibodies
Benefits of ridding autistics of yeast include better focus, less
hyperactivity, better sleep, more spoken words, improved socialization, and reduction in aggressive and self-injurious behavior
Using electro-spray mass spectrometry at Johnson & Johnson, it was found that peptides interact with brain receptors. Children become addicted to foods that make peptides and cause autistic symptoms.
To minimize MMR risk, it is suggested that vaccine be given mono; that is, a year lapse between injections of Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccines...even if it is less convenient than a 3-in-1 shot.
Hi everyone well I got my self all worked up for no reason. After I drove both of the little ones to the doctors (little sis needed an mmr also) we got in and waited (ofcourse) finally we get into the exam room and the nurse starts looking over there charts and says she cannot give them the shots because there last physicals were 0ver 6 months ago........now when I called to get them in for the shots I was told they could just do a nurse visit and get the shots because they only need a physical once a year??? Well someone was wrong and I wasted my time to go there to end up making another appointment!! But it kind of worked to my advantage because Nick was actually excited to go to the doctors which is a big surprise! I think it is because at his school the nurse gives them practice exams to get them used to having there eyes and ears checked, well I was thinking he won't be so happy after the shot, but he had a good time and still got a book and sticker so it was kind of a nice visit with out the pain to help ease him into going the next time. Even though it was a complete waste of time and gas!! Thanks for all of the info.
Nita
Hun don't sweat this one. Don't get the shot!!! Go to the office at school and sign a waiver form stating your reason's for not getting the shot. All they can do is if there is an outbreak of measels mumps or rubella send your child home from school. And when was the last time you heard of an outbreak of any of these? I did not have but one of my children get the chickenpox shot which is now manditory for school age children and each year I just sign the waiver form and have them put it in their file.
I think schools just like to terriorize parents sometimes!
I do not think you are crazy at all! It is a cute idea and whatever works is fine. The way people dress now adays I cant see that superman or hulk would be that far off base in fashion :)
