His arms "twitch" as I rock him to sleep | Autism PDD

Oh you guys are ALL so AWESOME.
THANK YOU...I feel so much better...thank you.
Granted, I'm still going to mention it again and watch for changes.
(I guess it's just the frequency of it that has me worried.)
THANKS AGAIN everyone...hugs
emerald, you're a jewel!

In another topic this was called a myoclonic jerk.  Here's the link to the topic:

My son has done  this since the day of his birth!

NO WORRIES!

I definitely understand your concern!

I think it's common in ALL kids.  If it's just an arm twitch here or leg twitch there, probably nothing.  Probably something to do with falling into different stages of sleep.

Tonic clonic (or convulsing) seizures usually the body tightens up, get really stiff, so that if you tried moving it, it would be difficult.  The whole body gets "involved" in this, but yes the legs or arms can be twitching or shaking too, but again the whole body is involved.  You can definitely watch for this more, and if you are seeing it happen during the day, while he is awake too, then definitely inform his doctor or neuro...but still I'm thinking it would sound more like a tic than a seizure.

As far as precursors--when my son has TC seizures they might start out slower and become more noticable, but again the whole body is involved, it doesn't start with an arm or leg first...does that make sense?  My son does have a precursor called an aura, but that doesn't involve the body, more the mind...he smells, sees, or feels something that isn't actually there.

I'm not a doctor, lol, but this is just what it's sounding like to me...but it never hurts to inform the doctors of your worries!  And please, if you have any more questions, just let me know or PM me.

Hope I helped a little.
I think twitching is very common while falling asleep and sleeping...especially if it's just the arms.  Mason has a seizure disorder and he twitches a lot all over his body while sleeping and those aren't seizures.  If they would become more constant or a full body jerk, then you might want to check into it more.
Thanks so much Niki.
I know it's not an actual seizure but am very concerned it may be a precursor.
I guess I'm wondering what other signs/precursors I need to be on the lookout for.
...When you say it's very common, do you mean for all children or specifically those that are Autistic?
Sorry, I'm just so freaked out since I happened upon that article.
And am concerned that his physicians haven't broached the topic of seizures.

Basically I want to prepare myself if need be.
I thnk it is common to ALL people (and animals).  I have heard it called, "prehensile jerk," as it is supposed to ensure that we are anchored properly to our tree limb, before drifting deeper to sleep!I think twitching is very common while falling asleep and sleeping...especially if it's just the arms.  Mason has a seizure disorder and he twitches a lot all over his body while sleeping and those aren't seizures.  If they would become more constant or a full body jerk, then you might want to check into it more.

After reading lots of links...not long ago was the 1st time seizures were mentioned. Prior to reading this particular article, we'd just had our 1st Developmental Peds visit in June. I'd mentioned my son's slight twitching (of his arms) to his regular Pediatrician as well as the Dev.Ped ... and neither one mentioned the possibility of seizures.

Does anyone have a similar experience or think they know what this may be? I'm kinda freaking out because I'd have no idea what to do if it were to progress into a seizure.

Yes, my son twitches when he's falling asleep too...but I never thought to mention it to the docs as I think I've seen NT kids do this too?  Now I'm worried about that as well, on top of everything else...
