Gtto, professionals can be so very clueless cant they?! Immensely frustrating. If it is overload/shutdown, wouldn't he have a meltdown or be headed for one? Both times he has told me about those things he has been calm. Once while we were watering the garden, and the other time when we were getting him ready for a shower. Thanks for your insight.
I have fibromyalgia (among other health problems) and suspect I am either an Aspie (scored 157 on the test from another thread) or HFA. I get what your son may be saying. Sometimes I could say I feel like I am "in a dream". It is like everything is kinda surreal, you feel like you are moving in slow motion, yet fast at the same time, everything is kinda hard to process, I feel like I have a buzz (but have not been drinking). Not sure how else to describe it...but I am told it is "brain fog" from the fibromyalgia. So, maybe your son is not having seizures or anything too serious..... but I do think I understand what he means. I think that sensory processing has a lot to do with it. Afterward (the "brain fog" can last anywhere from an hour to a few days at a time) I feel like it is hard to remember or understand anything that happened clearly during that time. Not sure if this helps...but I thought I would share.
Nikki,
thanks for the info. It is very frightening to think your child could be having seizures isnt it?! I hope your cute little guy checks out ok. I am going to PM Emerald tonight and ask her about seizures. Thanks again
I got the impression that he was saying he feels like he's in a dream sometimes, not that he felt he was in a dream getting into the shower?
I would certainly look into the possibility of seizures, but there are other possibilities. One, that he is scripting. He most likely heard the phrase "in a dream" on tv, not in real life. He might not really know what it means (my son used the phrase "I don't want to live anymore" from tv at age 8, without knowing fully what it meant).
Both times your son said that, there was water involved. Steam and water droplets give that fuzzy look that tv dream sequences have. Your son might be extra aware of visual changes that we take for granted. You might want to take a look at this simulation of "autistic vision." I don't know how accurate it is, but one of our forum members with autism said it seemed pretty accurate for her:

Good luck with everything.
I PM'd you and I don't know if I remember if I wrote this or not, but I think maybe the difference between an aura and "brain fog" like the other's posted is that Mason seems to be very aware of the aura. If he actually goes into a seizure, he might not remember, as clearly, but it seems that he still remembers the aura. Anna says she feels buzzed and it is sometimes hard to remember and understand. I don't think it is like that with aura's. At least what I can tell from Mason.
Your best bet is to watch him more closely for a little while and see if you pick up on any other "odd" behavior to go along with the feeling he is having...I hope I described what to look for in the PM...but if you have any more questions, let me know.
My son told me yesterday while I was helping him get into the shower that sometimes he feels like he is in a dream. Last month he asked me if all kids with Autism had their "eyes see blurry sometimes" I did get his eyes checked and the doctor said his eyes are just fine. I am still not sure what to think of his eyes "seeing blurry"
So back to what he said yesterday....I asked him what it feels like to be in a dream, and he says it is just weird. I asked him if he could see when he had that "dream feeling" and he said he could see fine. All he could tell me about what he said was that he felt like he was in a dream and it felt weird. I am at a loss as to what to think of what he said. My DH says I worry way too much. Could it be seizures of some type? My son is NOT one to share how he feels. Something has to be really hhurting or scare him for him to tell me about it. Id get him checked out for seizures for sure, it doesnt hurt to check. Ive been reading up on seizures and theres all diff types of them not just the kind that make you convulse plus up to 30% of asd kids have seizure disorders that coexist. Maybe hes having an aura which are small mini like seizures that sometimes indicate a bigger one to come or sometimes its just an aura itself. Anyway, my son has just had an eeg which came out normal and is going in for an mri next weekend because hes been telling me his head feels weird or funny which could be similar to what your son is feeling? There are other things my son is complaining about but thats what sounded similar to me with your son anyway. If you can, talk to Emerald she has alot of info on seizures. She helped me alot with understanding them more while im in the process of trying to find out with my son. Im def not an expert tho! But you should get him checked out just incase, and lots of times eegs come out normal so if you dont feel that was enough to rule out you should be on your doctor about it. Thats what im dealing with right now. I hope everything turns out ok for your son
I have no personal experience.
