finally a diagnosis | Autism PDD

So we went to the psychologist yesterday. Million questions and some observation later and we got an Asperger's DX.

He can't be officially diagnosed till 5 (He turns 4 in september) but if she could now he'd have a clinical DX with a possible upgrade to PDD-NOS. She has given us the names and numbers to some training seminars and some IEP workers to start getting him some help with his social problems and has given a lot of help with his tactile sensory problems.

Due to it not being an official dx and therefore not recognised by Autism Australia there is no help from them. But the psychologist has said we can ring her for help whenever needed and has given us a booklist etc So I will be here asking for help a lot still lol.

I am relieved to know I wasn't imagining it but now am just waiting for him to turn 5 to get an official dx so that he can get more help. I know we can do a lot for him ourselves but I'd feel more secure in having a professional visit him occasionally and tell me if something needs changing etc

Happy to know

edited to add - we have to make him some social stories, any suggestions on some good places to learn how would be appreciated.

heavensdj39298.6732986111Sandbox learning sells the materials. Glad you got the dx yearly. My worry is that many se kids are not going to get se help unless the disability is severe. Govt. plans to disqualify the rest of us with less severity. We both have been denied ssi help cause they say we are both not severe enough se people. My immune sytsem is shot even. To get ssi you must not be able to work. daniel's mom39298.6802314815

Well, now you know and can start getting your son the help he needs.

Here's a recent thread about social stories.  If you go to Norway Mom's post, she provides a link to a work sheet for planning a social story.

There is also a lengthy thread called Sample Social Stories that Norway Mom has going.  It has a ton of fantiastic links to all kinds of social stories.

All of them come with a free cd rom to print out social stories..you can make your own using real pics that your child is familiar with and putting them either on a board with velcro or get those little photo albums from the dollar store:)

This board is great for advice and support..come often:)
