teeth grinding | Autism PDD

by the way, my son has grinded down his incisors, too. I just noticed this today, in fact. It looks like he chipped them. you may want to take your son to the dentist to see if there is anything you can make him wear at night to stop the grinding. I will be taking Joe to the dentist soon. Just working up the courage (the last visit was a nightmare, it took 4 of us to hold him down).

my son grinds his teeth too. usually while he is sleeping, but I have noticed he does it occasionally during the day. He obsesses over numbers too. I let him do it. I pick my battles with him. There are so many other things I am working on with him that the obsessions don't seem too important. I'd rather concentrate on getting him to stop harmful or extremely annoying behaviors (like hurting his baby sister, waking her when she is napping, or talking in a repetative baby voice to her in a most ear-piercing tone).

If you find the number yelling annoying, then try to work on getting him to lower his voice. I know it's difficult, but you can use a reward system, this worked with my son.

All the best,

Ang.

does anyones children grind their teeth?? i used to hear cam just when he was sleeping but all day today he has been grinding his teeth so bad it freaks me out! maybe he's stressing out..

*another question: you know our childrens "obsessions" such as numbers, shapes..whatever?? well when cam starts doing his 1,2,3 1,2,3 over and over or he comes over to the computer and says numbers!!!!! this means he wants me to show him big numbers on paint or word or just on the internet and will sit on my lap and  point and yell numbers. he wont wanna get down for awhile.  Is allowing him to obsess i guess u could say bad? should i be trying to break him of these rituals that he finds comforting and makes him happy???

*thanks for everyones support by the way. this is tough but it helps having other people able to relate!!

My son grinds his teeth all the time, during the day time and night time. I dont know why he does it but i know hes grinding his teeth down (the little vampire shaped one, have no clue what thier called, incisors?).

I dont know about stopping any obsessions, i dont stop my son when he does them and I dont give much advice about things yet since im pretty new to all this too. Hope someone comes along with answersI grind my teeth at night sometimes. It is not a good thing. My dentist
wanted to fit me with a mouth guard but it just take it out. Mine is caused
by anxiety, had it ever since I was a kid.

I grind mine  and baught a gaurd from walmart cause the dentist ones are around 500. It cracks my teeth also. I am needing a whole dental/ortho. redo.

2 crowns so far.

My canines are FLAT on the biting surface --  LOL.  I also have 4 porcelain crowns, a 5th is imminent ... it is EXPENSIVE.

Not good that he is grinding during the day.  Indicates stress, or pain somewhere, possibly?  I would check into that. It also causes HEADACHES.

Can you get him to modify his posture?  I have read that it has to do with slumping and thrusting one;s head forward.  When I catch myself I straighten my back and it brings my head back above my shoulders and it really prevents my major muscle-tension headaches from starting.

Teeth grinding during the day is a sign of proprioceptive dysfunction -- basically it's a sensory-seeking behavior for deep-muscle/joint sensations.  You can help your child find a replacement behavior that meets this need.  Here's the sensory processing disorder checklist to help you identify other symptoms under proprioceptive and other senses.

As far as his numbers obsession goes, you'll have to trust your instincts on how much is good for you and your child.  With a little imagination, these special interests can be used to build other skills.

Good luck with everything.

my son grinds his teeth at night too...as foxl said, loud enough to wake me...

I don't know how long he's been doing it, as he was sleeping in his own bed until recently (I know, bad habit, but he's going through a lot right now; his father and I are in the midst of a very nasty divorce, and he always says he wants to "night-night in mommy's bed," how can I say "no"?)

we haven't been to the dentist yet, the mere thought of it makes my head spin...with what even getting just a haircut entails, I shudder to think of attempting the dentist, but I know we will have to do it soon...:(

Mine grinds his teeth only during the day and when frustated. For him it is not any kind of sensory seeking behaviour but due to frustration. Mostly due to his inability to fully express himself. He used to grind far more when he had fewer words. Now that he can make requests and statements he only grionds when he doesn't get his way. The dentist is not worried because they are his baby teeth and so far hasn't ground down the few adult teeth he has.

I talked about mine, but not T's!  She grinds only at night ... or did when she was sleeping in our bed ... so loud as to WAKE us!  And it goes with other parasomnias.

One other thing -- gum-chewing MAY help ... or it may sometimes trigger headache due to muscle pain.  I chew gum REALLY REALLY hard, if I have any, so I am better off not. But it's one thing worth a try.

Another teeth grinder here he does it ALL the time,  as a matter of fact he's doing it right now. The noise is soo irrating its like fingers being dragged down a chalk board

Its been pretty bad the last couple weeks.

My son grinds his teeth, mostly when he is asleep. We thought it ,might be TMJ and went to the docs to see. We were told to wait for a coiple of months and see if it persisted.

We also took him to the dentist. They told us he had 5 cavities, we just got them fillings out in about 3 weeks ago.

So far thr grinding has lessen alot almost completling gone.
