Ok, day 2 on Risperdal | Autism PDD

Share

My children, especially my autistic from birth child learned to love the bathtub because I would bathe with her (while wearing a swimsuit). You might give it a try if they don't associate baths with playing yet.

My daughter who was diagnosed at 13 started on Risperdal this last January 07 and as she was at the hospital I didn't notice gradual changes except for when I visited her twice a week. I do remember drooling but that went away pretty quickly. She gained 5 lbs a month for 7 months. I hope she's plateaud (sp) She was originally underweight and now she's just got a little extra weight at over 5 ft tall and 130 lbs.

I'm using this site to collect information as I'm writing a paper on The Safe and Effective Use of Risperdal in the Treatment of Autism. The best article I've seen was:

Silberner, J., 2007, Gene test promises to rind right drug, right dose, Retrieved July 22, 2007, from http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5568710 &ft=1&f=3

I hope that you experience all of the good benefits and no bad side effects or at least minimal side effects.

Sweet Sharlet may have began to get in her comfort zone.   I am only for medicine as a last resort, but in this little sweety's situation, medicine is the answer.

God Bless you all and may you all at last find some Peace.

I am fond of saying that the best thing that we as parents can do for our kids is to help them be most comfortable with the way that the world spins for them.

Much love from the Pittsburgh peopleI forgot to mention that for my daughter Risperdal seems like it's been a cure! She no longer exhibits any of the characteristics of autism and is completely sociable and very loving and loves to talk. She wouldn't talk or leave the house when she wasn't on medication. Anyway, I now see clearly that she is mildly mentally retarded as it's very apparent with how much she talks, how sociable she is and how affectionate she is.That's amazing, Allegra. I'm rooting for you, and hoping to hear more good
new soon! That's so good to hear.  I hope this positive trend continues.Well,
for Sharlet the results have been instantly noticeable.
Firstly she didn't wake up crying.
Secondly she has been FAR less fragile.
Thirdly, the researchers came today and she had only one marked
reaction to their changes in routine!!
Her attention span has been greatly increased today, in fact she sat
playing with play doh quietly at the table for 2 hours, and the most
amazing thing is that she was being far more creative than usual, making
2 balls put together and moving them around like people, she has only
ever done things with play doh that she has been shown in individual
therapy.
The only negative things I have noticed is that she is being less social and
drooling more, I hope these things subside in time.
I haven't tried to do anything like bathing or car yet, but I think I will
tomorrow. So far I feel positive that bathing is going to be improved at
least a bit already.

Allegra,

I am so happy for the both of you! Sounds like it's working!! Keep updating us on her progress..she is such a darling and I know you are so relieved to find something that works!! Many hopes for Sharlet to make huge progress!! How exciting:)

Thanks for the good news! That's terrific Allegra!!  Maybe she was a little drowsy causing her to be less sociable.
I bet she adjusts to it quickly.  I was happy to hear of your relief already!!  I think you did the best thing for Sharlet, and yourself.  Once she is over her fears, things will be so much smoother!!'
Best of luck

Thats great! I'm so glad it is helping her. That's Great Allegra.. She is making so much progress.. Way to go..  I'm so happy for you Allegra! That is great news; I am happy for you Allegra!

Yay Risperdal!!

Looks like you made a GREAT decision

glad the meds are helping and so quickly and apparently!

-- we already have too many tough calls  to make so a no-brainer like this is WONDERFUL news!

Awesome news!!  Congratulations!Glad to hear things are going well!   It sounds very promising!  Hope is a wonderful thing.

Allegra, I am so glad you see some relief already.  I put my daughter on Risperdal about 7 weeks ago, and we had instant results as well.

There is now a calm in my house that has never been here before.  SHe has fallen asleep a few times ( the very first day actually) but after about a week that stopped.  We have had no adverse effects at all....no drooling that you mentioned....and as far as social....it has made her more !

I'm thrilled to hear things are improving !!

We had immediate results with the Risperdal as well...unfortunately the drool is constant for us. It relaxes his jaw muscles. We had some drooling, but it only lasted for about two weeks the same with tiredness. Happy to hear things are improving. I am so happy that the Risperdal seems to be working. Hang in there and keep up the good work.

Keep us posted.
I was able to get her in the bath for 5-10 seconds!!!

She let me pick her up and carry her into the bathroom placing her in the
bath, she sat there for about 5-10 seconds and then she got out. She was
whimpering a little and she ran off but still I didn't have to drag her there!!!

I'm amazed the Risperdal has made a difference so fast. Now to use
behavior modification methods, slowly building up to 15-20 seconds, 2 min
etc, rewarding her for sitting in the bath and not trying to do any things she
hates. with this medication I can see light at the end of the tunnel, I feel like
all the techniques we are trying might actually work with her now. That sounds good, Allegra - sounds like you have a solid plan of action. Allegra, I'm glad to hear little Sharlet is feeling some relief!

As for the drooling, with Donny, it mostly goes away after a couple of weeks
(he gets extra drooly after a Risperdal increase, or if he's been off it and
goes back on).
