Karolysgirl,
We carry post-it notes with us to cover up the "eye" (sensor) on what my son
calls "MAGIC TOILETS"
I learned that trick right here on this very board! It works like a dream. Following the lead of Fred and Kristy, I will choose a new name that suits my attitude, Fred Mertz [ From I Love Lucy, for all of you young parents ]
Seriously, My real name is John. I am married for almost 9 years to the Love of my life, Anna Marie. I am 48 and she is 46. Our only child, Tyler is a happy, healthy, strong, creative, wickedly intelligent little boy of 5&1/2 years of age who happens to have PDD/NOS and Hyperlexia. I work out of town too much as a signal engineer for a railroad. I ride a motorcycle and like to golf with my buddies when I get a little time.
We live in Penn Hills PA. It is a suburb of Pittsburgh, which makes us Steeler and Penquin fans, it's a 'Burgh thing, yinz wouldn't understand.
We have only been recently diagnosed but haven't told anyone as such. The problem for us though is that he is so active that people are thinking if he has ADHD instead. Oh well, guess we have to start clarifying that soon for them.
The main reason I wanna tell close friends and family is the same,
I want people to understand that its not his fault, he is not to blame and that he is not naughty oe does not need a good dose of discipline.
I am NOT ashamed, I am extremely proud of my son. He is the most sweetest, loving boy on earth.
Maybe I want friends to understand just a little bit that why life is so different for me, and that we are not bad parents..
Mary
Hi, My name is Nikki and I am married to my husband Eric for almost 5 1/2 years. We have one son, Hayden who made 4 on June 29. We also have a dog, Rambo and a cat, Squeaky. My son was diagnosed on June 14, 07 with mild pdd-nos. I originally took him to see a nuerologist for his sensory issues (sensitive to touch, noise, light and picky eating) and also for a couple of seizures he had. Me and my husband were both shocked to say the least when the doctor brought autism up and are still trying to make sense of everything. In the very begining I was in kind of denial but researching it I see alot of the signs that my son has. I came to this forum to learn more about autism/pdd and everyone was and still is so helpful even when I ask the stupidest questions!Hello .....
My screen name is Tameka. I have three boys. My ten year old son is autistice. He went from speaking, to not speaking, to just making sounds, to sign language, to cracking jokes. I have been working as an ABA therapist since 2001. My son has gone from being severely autistic to mildly autistic to Asperger's Syndrome. I have shed lot of tears since he was diagnosed but I had to stop saying what he didn't know and what he couldn't do because you never know with autistic children. They will definitely surprise you!!! A lot of love, understanding him, and treating him no different is what got him where he is....I am so proud of him.....learn your child and what works for him. Every autistic child is different and unique in their own special way.

Hi Everyone,
Hi there. My name is Kristy. It's not my real name. I'm actually male and my real name is Fred.
Ok, I'm full of crap. Kristy is my real name. (Though when I was younger I used to give out fake names to guys in bars if I thought they looked creepy.)
I'm 39, happily married for 14 years, mom to my wild and crazy twin boys. I work full time in Information Technology for a large company. I live in Illinois in a suburb of Chicago. I have a great family. Life is good.
I'm Melody (25 as of last week). I'm a SAHM (and was previously to the diagnosis as well). I'm married to my husband James(27) who is a CAD designer.HAAAAAA HAAAA snort!!!! HEEEEE HEEEE! LOL!!!
Hi, I'm Crystal. A south Florida native. I have a 5yo dd. She just started kindergarten this year in a mainstream class even though an autistic cluster was recommended I really feel with the right supports she'll make more progress there. She seems to have an ear for music so she will be getting lessons as soon as we find the right teacher. To stay sane I go to the beach (which dd also loves), bellydance and sew. I'm in the process of starting up my own little business of children's costumes and clothing. Before becoming a SAHM I worked in various clubs and restaurants as a hostess but my favorite job was working at the library (so quiet and books everywhere!). I also have a wonderful 19yo dd (crazy having them so far apart but she's a fantastic help).
I like that everyone is doing this again. If you've been here a while just go back and read what you wrote the first time.....You will be shocked at how just your writing has changed! Everyone seems to be doing soooo good!!!! I love that!
Remember when you first got that diagnosis? Guess that old-saying is true: GOD NEVER PUTS MORE ON YOU THAN YOU CAN HANDLE!!!!
Hi everyone! My name is Karrie but I go by KaKingsbury. We live in Alabama "Go Big Bama - ROLL TIDE!" I am married to Mr. Kingsbury (I like to call him "THE KING") and I don't mind saying that I am the luckiest woman on earth! I am a SAHM but I like to say my job title is "Personal Assistant". I have 3 awesome kids - 2 sons 1/11 and 1/12 and we have 1 daughter - our ANGEL - Miss Grace Ann, she is 3. My 11 yr. old is Bi-Polar and the biggest DRAMA-KING! We havent allowed medication just yet because he is very athletic, but we will at some point! He has learned to somewhat control his disorder and does great in school, in sports, and all-around in life! My 12 yr. old is "NORMAL"
Our ANGEL - Miss Grace Ann - was diagnosed with Mild Autism plus a severe learning disability. At this point she has gained sooo much as far as functions. Everyday there is something new to see and do with her - masterpiece in progress -
I enjoyed reading about everyone and if you are new - WELCOME! I'm Amie, I am mom to Jason 5 and Samuel 2. We live in Washington. I have been married to Ron for 7 years this year. Jason was diagnosed right before his third birthday after waiting almost 18 months. Samuel was given a diagnosis of dyspraxia and sensory integration at 15 months and is currently undergoing evaluation again for autism. I am a full-time student working towards my bachelors in human development and pyschology. My goal after that is to continue on to medical school for a degree in Neurosurgery. I currently work full time at the hospital in ER (I just recently transfered from the ICU). My husband is also a full time student in Business Management program. This board has been a great help and I enjoy meeting all the new people on it. Hi gang, I'm Mary, SAHM to 4 kids... Paul (20-dx ADD/gifted), Sarah (16-highly gifted intelligence; dumb as a brick for common sense), Tony (12-1/2 dx HFA/mild MR), and Daniel (10-so far a very NT kid). At this moment, we live in central/rural NC. But next week, we are moving to DE for a new start! At least part of us... Paul and Sarah are staying here for school. That part drives me nuts, but can't put off the move any longer. Used to be a "career" insurance agent, and hope to get back into the working world once we're settled. Hubby "lives" and works in NYC, so we've had a long distance situation for almost 10 years. Not easy, but it works for us right now. Mary I'm Cindy, a stay at home mom to Daniel, who is 3 yrs old. We live in Georgia, but I am orginally from Maryland. I met my husband, Brandon, while I was serving in the Army. He is currently deployed. Daniel was given a diagnoses of mod-mild autism and mood swings this summer. I am not sure what the mood swing thing is, but it was written below the autism on the diagnoses section
I joined this group not to long ago, so I can ask advice and read about issues liek dealing with the schools, and insurance companies. I have gotten some great information so far! And it is nice to know I am not alone, and have other parents around I can relate too. Thanks for having me
I stay at home, while my hubbie is a hard working blue collar type guy- which is great cuz he can fix anything. I always wanted to be a mom, and it is challenging but fun. I am so glad I know ya all and love this board!!! I'm Fred, but that's not my real name. Just turned 38. Software developer for humongous software corporation (not that one). I'm an avid outdoorsy type and a recreational runner. My daughters are almost five and have 'classic', though mild-ish, autism (they have the full triad of impairments plus gross motor delays as a bonus - just not too severe in any area). I also have a seven year old son who has some broader autistic phenotypical traits, but who does not have a disorder. Their mother is a SAHM but is seeking to reenter the work force when school starts. Both of us have some traits, too, but neither could be considered to have a disorder. My son is 3 1/2 diagnosed with moderate autism. Another diagnosis he recieved was high functioning autism. I guess we'll see as he grows. I also have a NT 18 month old son. I've been married for almost 7 years. Since there are soo many new people, I thought it would be cool to reintroduce ourselves, our kids , ages, and where they fall on the spectrum... Mary, proud mama to Mark (3 yrs. old) with mild PDD-NOS (has a few words but mostly nonverbal), slight tantrums... I am 32..and also have a 7 year old boy, George (NT). Mom to Adam, 3 years 2 months old dx'd PDD-NOS and Allen, 15 years old, dx'd Nonverbal Learning Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder, Recurrent, Severe, Provisional with a rule out on Bipolar (in other words he's Bipolar just too young yet to dx). Sorry I don't give out names but here goes without! Snoopywoman - live in Minnesota Ds - age 6 and diagnosed with mild PDD-NOS Dd - age 3 and hopefully NT - has some quirks but recently evaluated and dev ped that I trust says she is definitely not on the spectrum Dh - researcher I'm a former social worker/in-home family therapist. Tuhina, 6, was my first. She was preemie and has a peripheral-nerve birth injury so we think that her comlpicated birth is what affects her brain ... she had EI for language delays and fine motor, but only got DX'd as ASD by her school, at age 6. It was big shock. My second kid, my dear son, Sam, 4.5, I THINK has ADHD/ODD but not yet diagnosed. I learn a lot about how to deal with him, here, too -- and post on him, too. Anyways, I like working with kids, if and when I have the chance, and my hobbies are keeping reptiles (tree pythons and boas are my favorite) and playing bass guitar (I'm currently in a band with my brother who plays drums).
I'm also an amateur photographer and sometimes post nature pics in here.
