My dd just started 1st grade and she is in the regular ed room for the most of the day except for an hour and then she is in special ed room. Well I am sensing that she doesnt like 1st grade because there arent any toys. She not excited to go to school and its only the second day! I swear she lives for toys. I am wondering for those parents that have kids that have already done 1st grade how did they do transfering from kindergarden to 1st grade? Did it take them a while to adjust to it. I was worried this would happen.
We are going into first grade mainstream..we watched modelmekids.com dvd time for school for social rules and what to expect..make social stories and tried to find books that were age appropriate about first grade~Junie B Jones is good. Hopefully she will settle in after time and the routine gets comfortable. Have the teacher use praise with her all the time for any good behaviors, eye contact or work..and do the same at home~she will learn that school is fun without all the toys and get to want the praise from the teacher even more:)
Best of luck!
Actually Adam did not have a hard time adjusting, he really didn't ineteract with anyone at that point, so it is hard to say.
But I can tell you that both of my NT kids had a very difficult time adjusting to 1st grade. it took over month for them not to complain about no toys and how hard the work was and sitting at a desk etc. I think it is pretty normal.
Here that grade was tuff cause of the 24 to 1 ratio in that class. Math he's great with. If he was returning to school he would have to do SE half the day he is 2 years behind his peers still. He is verbal. He is also a May b-day kid!
