Big hugs for you!!!
My DS does not havve MR, but I wanted to offer some cyber hugs {{{HUGS}}} for the difficult time you are going through. I know many, many people have suggested the book From Emotions To Advocacy, it is excellent. I have it myself and it tells you what services you are entitled to, how to go about getting them etc. Heres the link....www.fetaweb.comJust bumping for others that can help. Hang in there hOreshead. I am hoping your Doctor can give you advise on services that your child will need. You might what to do a search at the top of page for MR. Will be thinking of you.
Thanks . The doctor just called and will be sending me the letter with the dx. He says he will be entitled to medicaid, and some other inhome services. I will check out those links. thanks again everyone.Mega mega mega hugs
I just wish I could have you over and - set you down with a big glass of zinfadel and babysit your kids so you could zone out for a while
Hang in there, h0rsehead!
Glad he will be getting additional services!
Thanks so much everyone for your thoughts and hugs.My son was diagnosed as mild MR at age 7, and we are skeptical to this diagnosis because he was pretty much untestable -- just about completely disinterested in cooperating for the testing.
I also factor in his "stair-step" development, which is the hallmark of autistic children. For example, he made virtually no progress in reading/writing for 2-1/2 school years, and then suddenly he could write his name and within 3-4 months he was reading 70 words of text from his mainstream class' social studies book.
The old myth says that "most" autistic children are retarded, and the following topic on our forum covers this myth.

My advice to you would be to not let school or family the MR diagnosis become a self-fulfilling prophecy. By all means, set realistic short-term goals, but act as if the sky is the only limit on your son's long-term potential.
Good luck with everything.
My son has been dx'ed with M.R. I just found out today .The doctors said he was testing at the mild range. They did the vineland test and the school and a group of doctors tested his IQ. Part of me is happy because he will be able to get more sevices and part of me is scared wondering what the future will hold. Do any of your chidren also dx'ed with this . Can you tell me what extra services I can get for my son to help him?
