Daniel,

Good to see you on here. Haven't seen you in a bit.  THAT'S WONDERFUL!!!  It sure does sound to me like he is really making that effort to use language!!!  Your doing great!!!  Owen is doing great!!!!  Good to hear from you...keep us posted!!!  Take care,

karrie

Danielle everytime he does this tell him "Good talking Owen" or "Nice job using your words Owen" this is what they taught me at my sons school to encourage him to keep speaking. Also you could try to prompt him by actually telling him what to say when you are trying to get him to say something, this seemed to work very well with my son. It is nice to hear from you again. Good Luck I am so glad Owen is starting to use his voice for you!!!!

For the last few days, when I ask Owen "where are your shoes?" (he always goes and sits on the step to wait for me to put on his shoes) he says over and over ouuu ouuu ouuu is sounds just like shoes with out the shh part.

Also when ever he signs more he says mmMM mmMM and I realised it sounds just like how I say moRE moRe kinda raising my voice higher at the end.

I am so excited!! not really sure how to encourage it beside saying it alot to him, and giving him a chance...

I cannot even imagine what it would be like to hear him talk!!

Hi.

Continue encouraging him and giving him a chance.Communicating with him slowly and a little more exaggerated will help encourage him more to follow what you say, this will help him practice opening his mouth more.Read him bed time stories, encourage him to participate and react to shows he sees on tv,play with him, allow him to have active play with others.

You are doing great.

It will be more fun in the coming days...

Sounds pretty exciting.  Does he go to st?  M son made phenomenal progress with st and ot when he finally had emerging speech.  Few time in the latst10 years have been dramatic--but he started st and ot at 2 and within 3 months he had about 100 words.  It didn't stay at that pace but what I've experienced is that if he can do something once--like say one word--then, by God, he can talk.  The approach has worked.  What are the language suports you have in place?  How old is he?  I'm excited for you--but cautious--it's a complex rollercoaster but you're doing great.

ps  Your tatoo rocks!

I Agree with Nita to praise the heck out of his every attempt to speak! Good Words, nice talking etc....  I also agree with prompting him on what to say like Hi Grandma or I want drink as you hand him something to drink.
Something else that helps is giving him a sentence he knows but leaving off the ending for him to finish. Many people do this with singing some favorite songs. Once he says it (or tries) say Thats right good talking! and repeat the sentence to him.

Its great hes making progress! Keep up the good work!

MsSteelersFan38573.2887037037Great progress, Damielle and Owen!

I, too, have been wondering where you were!  Glad to hear your hubby was home for a bit and will be praying for his safe return home for good.
I second what Kellie said! it's great to see you back on the board, I pray for your hubby's safe return for good and I'm so proud of both you and your son!!!

my grandaughter does as owen does, sometimes she gets her shoes for me to put on. is this a sign that speech is in the future?

 Hi Robert,

While every child on the spectrum is different and not knowing much about your granddaughter, I will say it is a very good sign that she is able to comprehend and follow thru on tasks such as, "go get your shoes". It shows learning readiness. With proper therapy, anything is possible for these children.

I couldn't agree more with the other...encouragement and praise and saying "use your words" "good talking" were PRICELESS in our efforts.  At age 3, Riley had 5 words, and now at 9 (in 2 months) talks up a storm. (granted, has some articulation problems still, and does not always make sense...but the poor little guy tries and has come SO FAR!)

It's so funny, we used to say, man, if people could see how we talk around here, they'd think we're nuts!  But we did NOT let the fact that he didn't talk back to us stop us from having complete conversations with Riley....I talked to him more than I talked to anybody, explained everything I did, every step, everywhere we went, whatever we did.  I talked WAY more than would need be for anyone else.  Once a word or two came out, I'd get all excited "Good job using your words!!!" and ask him to use them as he progressed.  He thrives on praise!  And yes...it all started with sounds that sounded like they wanted to be words...we'd just stretch them out. and repeat, repeat, repeat!!!
Congrats to you!  Keep it going!!! [QUOTE=karjab30]

Owen is on the waitlist for ST. It is one year long, he shoul dbe picked up this October. I did an 11 week parent training in ST, but to hear something actually start to come out of his mouth has kinda shocked me! LOL now I just don't want it to stop. Sometimes with new skills like this, He does great, and then it just disappears! He was doing the ooouu for shoe a few months ago, for like 2 days, and then it went away until now again. I hope I can make it stick!

Thanks for the support!

Danielle&Owen,

That is great news--how exciting.  One thing my son likes to do is stand in front of the mirror when he tries to say words.  Sometimes we make a game out of it
and do it together.  The first word my son ever said was "water" he was listening
to a song by "Boys II Men" called "Water Runs Dry".  One day the video came on television and he said, "Water".  I think I called everyone that day.  Over the years (he is 14 now) he has added more words to his vocabulary.  He still doesn't talk a lot, but I'll take the words he does know.  Keep encouraging him--bravo for Owen

My husband is in the Air Force and my oldest son was born in Okinawa, Japan.  We used to joke when our son was younger the reason he didn't talk was because he didn't understand us talking English because he spoke Japanese.

God Bless you and your family!  I'll keep your hubby in my prayers.
