Language is generalizing! | Autism PDD

Thanks everyone. He is 3 1/2. It's not easy work, but I feel like we choose the right path at this point. It's not just the language, it's the connection he is making with people that impresses me so much. We still have a long way to go, I just feel it's important to celebrate the successes along the way. When he was evaluated at age 3, he had 20 words that he sometimes used. Now, I can't count the amount of words he uses.

Thanks again for reading my post. He works so hard and I'm so proud of him.

That's a good way of saying it, Shelley. Making taught verbal skills their own.

Congrats!!

When Sarah made her taught verbal skills "her" own and not just rote memorized language..it was magic.  Her emotionally language seems to go hand in hand with her verbal..all of a sudden people mattered, animals and her surrounding had meaning for her but it took VB/ABA to teach her to first:) I cant imagine what her not having this type of teaching as far as language is concerned...it truely is a science and those that do it well are worth their weight in gold:)

That is incredible news!    I love LANGUAGE EXPLOSIONS!YAY!! Thats fantastic, you must be thrilled.
Sharlet's labeling words have probably doubled in the last 4 months, it's
wonderful isn't it

This is so wonderful to hear. Can't wait for DS to have a language explosion.

One recent development for us is that he is now asking us parents to join in his play (joint attention?) (Mama I want trains, sit down). Still it feels great to be included and the fact that he is starting to take turns too is fantastic.

Don't you just love success stories?

Mary

I was so worried that the ABA/VB way of teaching language would teach him to say things but that he might not understand or use the words apporpriately. He is having a language explosion and it is wonderful. He is becoming so spontaneous and talking to many people. We do also use a lot of Floortime during the day with him as well. But, he is calling out his brother's name and a couple of peers when they are over to play. He wants them to play with him! Now, he is interacting and the circles of communication are increasing. He says things like, "play with me", "come with me", "pull me over here". Prior to this it was mostly labeling and requesting items. He is laughing and anticipating what others are going to do. This is so new to us and it is beautiful to watch him develop. Thanks for sharing the wonderful news!  We also recently started a VB/ABA program with our son, and we are seeing the same kind progress you are.  I honestly never thought I'd hear the words "language explosion" in regards to my son, or see him engaging other children like he's been doing. As you said, it's new to us and beautiful to watch. Flip that is just so awesome

Flip,

That's awesome - a HUGE step.  Once C started to generalize his language just exploded to a whole new level.  I'm so excited for you!

Flip...that is wonderful!  What a relief that must be for you.  I hope I can write a smiliar psot someday soon.

How old is your son?

YepperBepper39295.7767013889That is great news! I really do believe that VB/ABA is the best where
language is concerned.
