Yeast | Autism PDD

Share

I know there was a popular book awhile back called The Yeast Connection.  I personally haven't read it.  I do know there are some parents who use nystatin medication to reduce yeast in the brain.  Yet another possible reason for autism.  Sometimes a yeast free diet is done along with the GFCF diet.  I haven't ever looked into this, but it wouldn't hurt to research.hmmm, interesting theory, ive heard soooo many since ive been online doing this, only in recent history. The problem, its impossible to have a controled experiment to see what substances can cause problems, I mean, 1 has to reasonably assume these substances interact with everyone, and that for some reason only 1:150 r effected to where they show sighnes of a disorder, any disorder. My dad worked in a nuclear power plant his whole life, i could say, hey! that messed me up! Nature vs. Nurture, different chemicals can effect the phenom of certain genes, resulting in a number of problems, or gene mutation itself could be the problem, way to many variables, no clear answer. It would be good, if u did find something like a diet or whatever that worked, then science could maby have a better understanding, but its still not definitive. Just dont trust the "professionals" when they say, something causes something else as their r many factors involved.

I hope u find somethin that works, if a yeast elimination works, and does so for many others, that can be strong evidence, and years in the future I hope we find more answers.

Hi! I'm a newbie and have been trying to read a lot of posts as to what has helped.

Can someone explain how yeast is tied into Autism? And how would I go about finding out if yeast is affecting my child?

Thanks so much for everyone's help and information.

My 4 yr old had severe yeast...The dr spotted it and we tested him through Great Plains Lab in Kansas... http://www.greatplainslaboratory.com/home.htm ...the test is the Organic Acid Test(full)...The lab gives a report of their findings and explains what each item that is concerning means...You may need a dr to order the test...they take PPO insurance or you can self-pay...that's what I had to do...My dr prescribed GFCF diet, all organic food and unprocessed food (no granola bars) and herbal anti-fungals as well as acidophilus...it took several months (6)to kill it, but I think it is working...the great thing about the herbals is it doesn't effect the liver like the prescriptions can...I don't know what causes yeast, maybe they are born with it...I think mine was, he looked so pale even from birth...by the age of 2, he was having yeast infections every month and since the treatment, we haven't had one...recently, he had an ear infection, we treated with herbs instead of antibiotics and no yeast!!! Stimming is a common symptoms of yeast problems, that's what mine had, he would spin in circles all day long and now the spinning happens only occassionally!!!

I hope this helps!!!Thanks so much everyone for all the info. Can a regular pediatrician order tests for yeast overgrowth? What kind of test is it?Since we all have yeast in our bodies, a yeast test, so to speak, isn't very effective.  Most mainstream doctors I've known don't believe in yeast overgrowth, so your best bet is a D.O., chiropractor, or other alternative med. dr.  They will give you a lengthy questionnaire to get a better history and determine whether you've done things that could cause a yeast problem along with some basic bloodwork to test nutrient levels, thyroid function, liver function, etc.  I've only read about this, so there may be other methods of testing, but the important thing is how you TREAT it.  Most treatments are harmless (except for the Herxheimer reaction, which is miserable), so you don't have much to lose.  I'd check out a book or website about treatments rather than spending thousands on tests that may or may not prove anything.  Yeast issues are pretty common nowadays, anyway.Hi Vivsha:

I went to my regular ped last yeast about testing for yeast and he gave me the run around...he did some basic stool testing and celiac sprue testing which all came back normal...a few months later, I went to an osteopath who ordered specific testing for yeast overgrowth through Great Plains Lab...I would recommned that to look into finding a DAN practitioner (autistic dr)...here is their website http://www.autismwebsite.com/ARI/dan/danusdis.htm ...this kind of dr can order the test, Organic Acid Test, that will tell you if your child has yeast issues...the way we treated for yeast was using Biocidin (herbal anti-fungal) and osteopathic treatment...he manipulates the stomach to help it heal along with acidophilus and essential oils...over a few months time, we changed over to using Black Walnut Hull and after 8 mo of this treatment, his stomache is healed...yeast is very difficult to treat but for some kids it is the path to recovery!!!

Hope this helps!!!

Hi Ann, I've been on DAN's website and non of the doctors there are in my insurance plan. I was hoping to get some of the tests covered by my insurance but wasn't sure if the regular pediatrician could order these tests.

Thanks!

I think any dr could order the tests...in order for the tests to be covered, you need to have PPO insurance...we have HMO and Great Plains Lab doesn't bill them...My reg ped. is old fashioned and isn't ready to accept new things, so I now see an osteopathic ped and he is very progressive!!!

Books w/ Yeast Info:

Biological Treatments for Autism and PDD (Revised 2002 Ed) by William Shaw

Children with Starving Brains (2007) by Jaquelyn McCandless

Biomedical Assessment Options for Children with Autism and Related Problems (2005) by SM Baker, MD and Jon Pangborn, PhD

These books are not directly related to autism, but have great information:

Yeast Connection Handbook (1999) by William Crook

Yeast Connection, Medical Breakthrough (1987) by William Crook

Yeast Connection Cookbook; Guide to Good Nutrition and Better Health (1989) by William Crook

Thanks so much little byrd, everything is so informative! What I know is this prevents good absorbtion in the body to the brain. You can do your own free test at home sliva in a glass of luke warm water. If the saliva floats you have yeast. I hear you have to kill the yeast first.

Here's a list of stimulators of yeast overgrowth and some ways to help control it:

STIMULATORS OF YEAST

Molds (including airborne exposure and foods processed with molds)

Yeast-containing foods

Food allergies/sensitivities, which lower immunity

Viruses and bacteria

Sugar in all forms, including natural sugar in juices

Nutrient deficiencies

Exposure to paints, garbage, radiation, pollution, and other unavoidable factors

Imbalance of intestinal flora

Things that weaken the immune system: vaccines, stress, and other factors

The use of antibiotics and contraceptive pills

THINGS THAT CONTROL YEAST

Nystatin and other prescription antifungals

Garlic and onion supplements

Probiotic supplements (dairy-free)

Plain white yogurt (ONLY if not allergic to milk or yogurt)

Herbal supplements like oil of oregano, thyme, and Kombucha tea

Liquid/sublingual/injectable multivitamin/mineral supplements

A wheat-free, yeast-free, low-carbohydrate diet low in sugar

A rotation diet

Adequate exercise, sleep, and relaxation

The goal is to stimulate the immune system, 70% of which lies in the gut, as yeast only grows out of control when the immune system isn't functioning properly.  We all have Candida albicans, or monilia yeast, in our bodies, but our diets and unnatural industrialized lifestyles have made it a major problem in our society.  Yeast may leak from the gut into the bloodstream and across the blood-brain barrier, causing drunkenness and hallucinogenic reactions and behavior.  For this reason, it's wise to consider yeast overgrowth in autistic people.   Many mothers of ASD children have been shown to have unhealthy intestinal environments, as well.  Autism is only ONE condition for which yeast may be a contributing factor.  There are many many more...

Ask me anything about yeast overgrowth.  I have been dealing with it for most of my life.

We've been treating with Black Walnut Hull and Osteopathic treatment and after 6 mo, the yeast is almost gone and he is never sick!!  I HEAR ACCUPUNTURE CAN CURE ALLEGIES FOR SOME. EVER DONE THIS ANYONE?I've heard that from a woman that runs a natural products store, after I had a gallbladder sonogram done with a small amount of Radiation and Heavy Metals on top of it. She asked if I had Autism, and my mother turned around and said, "Yes, she does." I have had the Peanut allergy too, and I forgot what she said about that also. All I know is it had something to do with the subject obviously.

That is an interesting test. Has anyone else tried putting saliva into a glass of lukewarm water?
