Does anyone know how  I can prove to the IU that my daughter NEEDS  aba  therapy instead of  one size fits all special ed? Is there a specific test or evaluation? Or do we have to go to court? I don't know what she needs, but it has to be better than this!

Awesome information you guys. I am following up on everything here. I have had a discouraging night (you know, awake, thinking, thinking, feeling bad for my dd, comparing her to other kids her age, wondering about the future, etc etc) but today I am ready to do something new. I  am going for it. Thank you.

missnippy - What state are you in?

In order to get my son ABA, I had to apply for Wisconsin's state waiver program.  I know other people on the board have had to pay for ABA out of their own pockets.  In some places, children are able to get it through their school district.  It all depends on where you live.

Hi, I live in PA. And no one at the special ed school that she is in has ever mentioned ABA. Someone here suggested that I get training and do it myself. I work full time! I am very upset that she might be missing something that could help her. Sorry to sound so frantic.

There are several board members from Pennsylvania.  It's my understanding  Pennsylvania has something called wraparound services.  I went to the Search icon at the top of the page and typed in Pennsylvania.  There are a number of pages of threads in which your state is mentioned.  There may be some helpful information there for you.  I did find a thread in which a board member indicated that their child is receiving ABA and it's being paid for by the state of Pennsylvania.

Missnippy- My ABA was first funded by our EI and then by the SD. I live
in Southern California. Both the EI and SD in our area will offer speech
and ot for services. They rarely ever offer ABA. You have to prove a need
(have a private eval done) have to prove that the SD's program has no
benefit (in many cases they are so stretched for services they do not have
consistant staff)
My ABA agency at the time had a contract as a NPA with the school
district so I got lucky. I had to fight at every IEP for the ABA. I was lucky
that I had a good friend whose son had autism so I made about 10 phone
calls on the day of my son's dx. I had the ABA in place before EI offered
anything. I had an eval done right at the time I started ABA and 6 months
later, provided by our EI. He was a different child in just 6 months time.

What you need to do is get to know the parents and advocates in your
area, know what is available and go for it.

alot of people seem to get alot of preschool time. how? theyve made it seem all they have for kids here is the 9am-12am preschool/spec ed. they have an ot and slt that come in 1 maybe 2 days a week to do one on one a little. do i have to ask for extracuricullar activities? ask for carryover into the home after school? do they provide more therapy 'in class' after school hours?

Preschool hours are given based on need. Not every autistic child even gets preschool.  Some get related services only, if their needs are milder.  Half day preschool is typical.  If a child has LOTS of pull-outs for therapies (say, 7 per week), then an extended day is warranted.  If the child must have lots of hours of ABA, an extended day is warranted.  Not every preschool ASD child NEEDS all these services. If you think your child needs more services than he's getting, you must get testing/evaluations to back this up. Then your son will get more.  If he's getting close to kindergarten age and needs more help to transition, you also might be able to make a case for a longer day.  All services are based on need so you must prove your son NEEDS the longer day.

I live in Pa,  Yes  they offer wraparound services here.  Your child must be on medical assistance to recieve wraparound.   Any child with a disabliity automatically qualifies for medical assistance,   Don't ask me why they do it this way.......dumb,   even if you have medical insurance already in place you still must apply for assistance if you want wraparound......waste of taxpayer money.

but anyhow it  is good for those who need it .  i actually am desperate for wrap around.   i have procrastinated with filling out the medical assistance form  I think i have a mental block when it comes to it.

Fl gives all kids with IEP's full day for pre-k. CO gives kids IEP's 3 hrs grrrrrrrrr. The funny part k is  around 29 mins shorter lol, really sad!
