Have any of you done this?
My older son has a pdd-nos diagnosis...and my younger son(11mos.) just got picked up by EI for some gross motor issues. He is showing no other signs of being on the spectrum(very engaged, even temper, good eye contact, good sleep rhythms, etc)...however now Im paranoid about the MMR.
I went to my pedi to discuss--and explained that I realize there is no data to back it up--but I just want to avoid any possible guilt that I might have to suffer through I i give him the vaccination and he develops more positive signs of autism. I would always wonder.
He seemed to buy into it--but said you CANNOT buy the three components of the vaccination from Merck(who has the monoply on the MMR). I have heard that you can do that.
Can anyone give me info on this--and start my goose chase off in the right direction! I have his one year visit in August and need to go in prepared...thank you!
Thank you! jen
They absolutely CAN do that. It may be that insurance isn't willing to PAY for it, but it can be done. It is more expensive. Perhaps if you offered to foot the bill (if you can afford it). They have to order them in groups of 10 - so maybe try to recruit 9 other families who want to do the same thing?
I honestly don't know what I'll do for my dd when she gets close to kindergarten - because we are in a new town, will have a new doctor, etc. There are no clinics in our small town - we will have to travel and I won't know any families who will go to that doc most likely because it is 10 miles away...
www.autism.com has information about MMR/ Vaccinations and where you can purchase the vaccines separated. The two compounding pharmacies they listed were Hopewell Pharmacy in New Jersey and Wellness HEalth in Birmingham, AL. You can google both and get their websites.
Another good site about vaccinations is www.generationrescue.org and www.909shot.com
Your pediatrician probably just doesn't know of the separated vaccines but I found them at our local childrens hospital. They have to order the vaccines and then the shot nurse there will give them. I called every pediatrician in town and finally found one that told me who to contact. I find it disturbing that most pediatricians just parrot what the drug reps tell them. I don't know where you live but I would try the hospital closest to you that caters to kids.

If it's a pre-Kindergarten booster, get your child's blood drawn for antibodies to measles, mumps, and rubella. If antibodies are adequate, your child is immune and does not need that particular shot. (This may also cost more $$$.)
The phone # for Hopewell Pharmacy is: 609-466-1960. There are other numbers, but this is the one I have. They will ship.
I had the MMR split for my youngest.
I also had my oldest get just the measels booster in kindergarten.
My ped carries the separated vaccine. We were in the same boat with Dominic a few months back and opted for the separate MMR. Our doctor told me that I need to do whatever will let me sleep at night. Dominic received each shot about 3 weeks apart.
